Location of Elster (Elbe) in Zahna-Elster

Elster (Elbe) is a district of the town of Zahna-Elster in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

Elster (Elbe) lies at the confluence of the Black Elster in the Elbe , 15 kilometers east of Lutherstadt Wittenberg and ten kilometers west of Jessen (Elster) . The districts of Gielsdorf , Iserbegka and Meltendorf also belong to the locality of Elster (Elbe) .

The Elbe meadows are scenic and act as natural polders during floods . During the flood of the century in 2002, however, these natural polders were not sufficient, so that large parts of the town were flooded by the floods.

In 2004, a landing stage was inaugurated, where large passenger ships offering Elbe cruises can also dock.

history

Merger of MTS with LPG on August 2, 1958

Elster was first mentioned around 1161 as the Burgward district of Alstermunde in a document from Bishop Balderam of Brandenburg for the Premonstratensian Monastery of Leitzkau (Codex diplomaticus Brandenburgensis, A 10, p. 77). Until the Second World War , Elster was an important boatmen and fishing village.

In 1180 the Burgward von Alstermünde was subordinated to the Leiskau Monastery (today Leitzkau ). Elster belonged to the Duchy of Saxony. In a deed of donation in 1385, Elector Wenzel I signed over the taxes of the city of Elster to his wife. In 1513 the term "Stetlein" appeared in the Wittenberg hereditary book about Elster with 150 residents belonging to the Wittenberg district. After the death of the last mayor Laurentius Elstermann in 1625, the tombstones were kept in the church where they are still today. Due to the devastation of the 30 Years War , Elster lost its town charter in 1648.

In 1813 the battle of Wartenburg took place. Elster played an important role in Prussia's victory over Napoleon . The rectory was built in 1856 and the schoolhouse in 1859, and in 1867 the foundation stone for today's church was laid. The first school and home festival took place in Elster in 1871. In addition, the construction of the Wittenberg-Elster-Falkenberg railway line began that year and was completed in 1875.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities Gielsdorf and Iserbegka were incorporated.

Until 1952 Elster was a municipality in what was then the Wittenberg district . With the administrative reform in 1952 , Elster was assigned to the newly founded Jessen district in the Cottbus district . With the reintroduction of the federal states in the GDR, the Jessen district became part of Saxony-Anhalt. Since the district reform in 1994, Elster has belonged again to the Wittenberg district .

On January 1, 2011 Elster (Elbe) became part of the newly formed town of Zahna-Elster together with other municipalities of the Elbaue-Fläming administrative community . The administrative community was dissolved.
