Emil Graf von Schlitz

Count Emil Friedrich Franz Maximilian von Schlitz called von Görtz (born February 15, 1851 in Berlin ; † October 9, 1914 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German sculptor and cultural politician , Hessian nobleman and confidante of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Life

Emil Graf Görtz came from the noble, former imperial counts , who were wealthy in Hesse , the von Schlitz gen. Von Görtz . His parents were the grand ducal Hessian diplomat Karl Graf von Schlitz gen. Von Görtz (1822-1885) and Princess Anna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (1827-1902). With the death of his father in 1885 he became the head of the family and assumed the title of ruling count . Untypical for an aristocrat, he studied sculpture under Joseph Echteler at the Munich Art Academy and became an artist. From 1885 to 1901 he headed the art school in Weimar , in 1894 he and others founded the pension institution for German visual artists .

As a Hessian registrar , Görtz was a hereditary member and finally from 1900 to 1914 President of the First Chamber of the Grand Duchy of Hesse - a position that his father already had.

Friendship with Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Count Görtz and Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, who was eight years his junior, were raised together in their youth, among others by Georg Hinzpeter . The two boys formed a friendship for life: In later years, Count Görtz belonged to the inner Liebenberg circle around Count Eulenburg . The emperor in turn often visited him to hunt in his Hessian castle; between 1891 and 1910 he is said to have spent every year at Görtz hunting capercaillie .
