Joseph Anton Emil Ritter and Edler von Xylander (born February 20, 1835 in Frankfurt am Main , † October 7, 1911 in Munich ) was a Bavarian colonel general of the cavalry .

Life

origin

Emil came from the old Palatinate-Bavarian officer family Xylander . He was the son of General Joseph von Xylander and his Mannheim- born wife Karoline, born von Tausch (1802–1878), daughter of Lieutenant General Georg von Tausch (1766–1836). His brother Heinrich (1840–1905), who was five years his junior, was also a Bavarian general.

Military career

Xylander joined the 3rd Chevauleger Regiment of the Bavarian Army in 1851 and, in 1863, was adjutant to General Jakob von Hartmann . and took part in the war against Prussia in 1866 . In 1867 Xylander advanced to Rittmeister , in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he led an squadron of the 4th Chevauleger Regiment and was then a member of the General Staff until 1877. He became commander of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment , and in 1879 a colonel and department head in the War Ministry . In 1881 he took over command of the 1st Cavalry Brigade . From 1882 to 1884, Xylander was entrusted with the business as the inspector of the military penal institutions. Then King Ludwig II appointed him military and federal representative in Berlin . In this position he advanced to major general in 1885 and lieutenant general in 1890 . In May of the same year he returned to Bavaria and on October 1 was appointed commander of the 5th Division in Nuremberg . In 1895 he was appointed General of the Cavalry as Commanding General of the II Army Corps in Würzburg . After ten years, Xylander retired in 1905 and in 1911 still received the character of Colonel General.

His son Rudolf continued the tradition as major general in World War II and as a military historian .
