Emomalij Rahmon , until March 21, 2007 Emomalij Sharifowitsch Rahmonow ( Tajik Эмомалӣ Раҳмон, Эмомалӣ Шарифович Раҳмонов ; Russian Эмомали Рахмон Emomomali Rahmon ; English Emomali Rahmon ;امامعلی رحمان(in Arabic script ); * October 5, 1952 in Danghara , Kulob Province , Tajik SSR , Soviet Union ), has been President of Tajikistan since 1994 . In November 2013 he was re-elected for a fourth term.

Life

After studying economics at the Tajik State University , he worked as a party secretary in a farm. With the help of President Rahmon Nabijew (Раҳмон Набиев) he later rose to become the director of a sovkhoz in his home region. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Rakhmon was on 20 November 1992 during the civil war by the prevailing "Supreme Soviet called" Parliament elected chairman and finally on November 6, 1994 to the President of Tajikistan. The opposition and foreign observers criticized the elections for irregularities . In the course of the presidential election in Tajikistan in 1999 , he was confirmed as president for a further seven-year term. In the following presidential election in Tajikistan in 2006 , Rahmon won again in the first ballot with more than 80% of the votes and was thus legitimized in the office of president until 2013. On March 22, 2007, Emomalij Sharifowitsch Rahmonow , as he was previously called, changed his name to Emomalij Rahmon. According to Rahmon, this is part of Tajikistan's new identity. He holds the title of Hero of Tajikistan .

At Rahmon's request, a constitutional referendum was held in Tajikistan in May 2016, at which more than 90 percent of the population voted in favor of lifting the nominal two-term limit for a president. In addition, the voting age of a presidential candidate has been reduced from 35 to 30. According to independent media such as the Kyrgyz news agency " Akipress ", the Tajik head of state paved the way for his eldest son Rustam Emomali to legally run in the upcoming presidential elections in 2020. In that year, the nominee-designate will be 33 years old.

In January 2017 Rustam Emomali was appointed mayor of Dushanbe by his father . The previous mayor and long-time colleague of Emomali Rahmon Mahmadsaid Ubaidullojew , who is also President of the Tajik parliament, had to leave because, according to independent observers, the head of state saw in him a potential obstacle on the way to consolidating the power of his family clan.

The international community has repeatedly denounced the Rahmon government for violating human rights and freedom of the press. The government is also criticized internationally for corruption and links with commercial enterprises, particularly in connection with the country's largest industrial company, the state-owned aluminum factory TALCO in Tursunsoda .

religion

Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and made his pilgrimage to Mecca in March 1997. He advocates close relations between the Islamic countries in the region, particularly with Iran and Afghanistan .

During the meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Dushanbe in 2010, Rahmon spoke out against the "abuse" of Islam for political purposes. "Terrorism and terrorists have no nation, no country and no religion." Rahmon added: "By using the term 'Islamic terrorism' only Islam is discredited, this degrades the pure and peaceful religion of Islam."

Fearing growing Islamism, Rahmon signed a law in early August 2011 that bans young people under the age of 18 from visiting mosques in Muslim Tajikistan . Parents face long prison sentences if their children attend religious ceremonies. Only funerals are excluded.

Private

Emomali Rahmon is married and has nine children, including seven daughters. One of his daughters, Osoda Emomali , is the chairwoman of the presidential cabinet . Another daughter, Rukchona Rakhmonova , heads the international relations department of the Tajik Foreign Ministry.
