A Soap (German: A Soap ) is a Danish Love - Drama and the directorial debut of Pernille Fischer Christensen from 2006. According to the principles of Dogma 95 designed, the film is a romance between the androgynous acting Charlotte and her feminine in his behavior appearing, transsexual neighbor Ulrik, who, it seems, wants nothing more than a gender reassignment. He longs for life as a woman, we learn that he will later call himself Veronica. The Danish Dogma95 film received various reviews and several awards. A German version and publication was never due.
action
New Horizons
Charlotte breaks up with her long-time boyfriend Kristian because of boredom in the relationship and moves into the first apartment she can find. Now she lives directly above the transsexual Ulrik, who is prostituting himself and planning a gender reassignment , wants to become a woman and then finally wants to call himself Veronica. Without needing to do so, Charlotte invites her ex-boyfriend into her apartment and asks him to help her with any work in the apartment and with moving in with the boxes and boxes. Kristian uses the opportunity presented to him to convince her to come back to him immediately. After realizing how hopeless this endeavor is, he disappears from Charlotte's new, own apartment. Charlotte then asks another man for support. She asks her new neighbor Ulrik to help her move in. Ulrik is dismissive. He's reluctant to help Charlotte.
Dark clouds
Charlotte is woken up one night by a yelp from Miss Daisy, Ulrik's dog. She then goes to his apartment to complain to him. She finds out he's half dead and calls an ambulance. Since Ulrik has to stay in the hospital for a few days, she takes care of Miss Daisy. Ulrik later thanks her for her care and promises to do her every favor in the future, no matter what kind. Charlotte doesn't know what to do with it at first. A visibly happier and friendlier Ulrik returns to his apartment, where he unexpectedly receives a visit from his mother. This intends to prevent him from his long-awaited sex reassignment.
Sweet music
Charlotte later calls in Ulrik's promised help. She wants Ulrik to have some simple white curtains for her new apartment. Ulrik is happy about this task and sews curtains for her. In the meantime, they watch his favorite stelenovela together on television in their apartment . Charlotte discovers a romantic Ulrik, which she likes very much. The evening is going well. They dance together. Charlotte and Ulrik drink alcohol together. They come close. Charlotte approaches Ulrik with determination. She kisses him. Ulrik obviously doesn't want that. Instead, he tells her in detail how much he wishes to finally have a gender reassignment. His story makes Charlotte so aggressive that she finally throws him out of the apartment with a loud cursing.
The heart beats
Charlotte is suddenly unsure of how she feels about Ulrik. And right now Kristian appears again, who wants to ask her again about her feelings, since he still does not understand why she left him. He sees the possibility of getting closer again. Finally he takes her off guard. She lets him take her. After a few seconds, the sexual act is already over, Kristian quickly dresses. At first apparently out of an impulse, in an affect, he hits Charlotte in the face. Later, however, he deliberately kicks her to the ground with full force. He insults her. There is a mess in the end. Then competitor Ulrik appears on the scene and knocks Kristian to the ground. Ultimately, Ulrik manages to put the enemy to flight. Then he takes the woman home with him, into his own apartment. There he takes care of Charlotte and her needs. Living with the woman is good for him. They get very close.
Two souls
Charlotte and Ulrik are about to have sex when Ulrik unexpectedly breaks off their love game, instead of continuing as expected, he sends her away, she goes back to her apartment. There, Charlotte resolutely packs up some of her things and calls Kristian. This rushes to her immediately. He apologizes to her and finally begs that she may forgive him for his wrongdoing first. Charlotte then willingly lets himself into another night of love with him. The next morning she confesses to him that she can imagine a future for both of them and that she announces that she wants to move in with him. At this moment competitor Ulrik appears. In turn, he confesses his love to her. However, this love can only be realized for him after gender reassignment. Only as a woman could he imagine a relationship with Charlotte. Since Charlotte cannot do anything with him under these conditions, she draws the consequences and sends Ulrik away. When she is with his competitor Kristian, Charlotte clearly perceives that she cannot be with him. She then sends him away too. A little later she finally admits to the strong attraction that Ulrik obviously exerts on her despite everything. In the next scene she learns - he comes to visit her in her apartment - that Ulrik will soon have his longed-for sex reassignment operation. Charlotte is not enthusiastic about this announcement, on the contrary. However, she walks up to him, kisses him. We learn that she wants to tell him a secret. Both faces are beaming. They smile at each other.
criticism
The film received mixed reviews because, depending on the country, the criticism was almost consistently bad or positive. The Rotten Tomatoes website counted 6 positive out of 11 professional English-language reviews, which corresponds to a value of 55%. However, the film was received with far more positive reactions from the general public, because at the same time 68% of 1,574 users rated the film positively. This in turn is more than confirmed by the online film archive IMDb , another platform on which normal users can submit their film reviews, as 1,104 users gave the film an average of 6.6 out of 10 possible points. (As of August 26, 2011)
The Danish website cinemazone.dk found that the director found the “energy and originality” when she showed with an “ironic distance” how the masculine Charlotte met the feminine Ulrik and what could develop out of it, like in a soap opera.
Kim Toft Hansen said on the Danish website kulturkapellet.dk that the film "sometimes gets a little boring". And on the one hand, she praised the acting performances, which are good, and on the other hand, she criticized Trine Dyrholm , who "plays well, but too one-sided," and David Dencik , who "presents his character" implausibly.
On arte.tv criticized Julien Welter, that the film was designed to be unnatural and too mechanical, he therefore based his "penchant for physical, clumsy exchange [...] to the obvious lack of interest in cinema anknüpft itself, which in most Dogma -Films could be felt more or less strongly. "
In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Andreas Platthaus said the film was "of the particularly stupid kind". Verena Lueken also saw the film as "a much too long stirring piece full of repetitions, visual inconsistencies and psychological nothingness, but without dramaturgy and without any feeling for the time."
In the New York Times said Stephen Holden that A Soap "an anti-soap opera" is that realistically show how the "life imitates the kitsch" and yet it would remain banal.
Ruthe Stein of the San Francisco Chronicle saw in En Soap a kind of film adaptation of the novel Fear of Flying by Erica Jong . On the one hand, she praised the setting that, thanks to the “inventiveness of the Danish director, never seemed claustrophobic ” and, on the other hand, criticized the actors' “down-to-earth performance”.
background
The basic idea of the film came up when Pernille Fischer Christensen met a transsexual for the first time in her life and she wondered who sat across from her first, a man who wants to be a woman, or just a person. In this film she tried to explore this question of what comes first, gender or humanity.
