Ergenstein

The Ergenstein is a 419.7  m above sea level. NHN high elevation in the German low mountain range Taunus . It is located near Schönborn in the Rhein-Lahn district of Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ).

The Ergenstein rises in the western Hintertaunus in the eastern neighborhood of the Nassau nature park . Its summit is 1.5 km east of Schönborn, 3.5 km west of Hahnstätten , 4.3 km northeast of Klingelbach and 1.5 km north-west of Hohlenfels Castle . The elevation with the chicken head upstream to the north (approx.  390  m ) is located in the northeastern part of the Einrich landscape .

The northeast crest of Ergenstein is 419.7  m high, the southwest crest 414.1  m . The medieval Hessenstraße runs south past the mountain in a north-east-south-west direction , from which the north-facing Rintstraße branches off, which leads directly west past the summit.

Natural allocation

The Ergenstein belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30), in the main unit Westlicher Hintertaunus (304) and in the subunit Katzenelnbogen plateau (304.9) to the natural area Central Katzenelnbogen plateau (304.92). To the east, the landscape falls into the natural area of Schiesheimer Aartal expansion (304.93). In the north-east there is the sub-unit Southern Limburg Basin (311.2), which belongs to the main unit group Gießen-Koblenzer Lahntal (31) to the main unit Limburg Basin (311).

Flowing waters

The Hohlenfelsbach rises to the southeast of the Ergenstein and the Merschelbach to the north-northeast, both of which flow into the Aar near the mountains . To the southwest lies the source of the Sommerbach, which flows into the Dörsbach near the mountains . The Schaufertsbach rises in the west-southwest, whose water flows through the Schönborn Bach, which swells to the west, into the Wasenbach , which has its source at the Hühnerkopf .

Protected areas

Summit plateau of the Ergenstein

Parts of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Taunuswälder near Mudershausen (FFH no. 5714-303; 17.68  km² ) are located on the Ergenstein . Except for its south- eastern slope, those of the Hohlenfelsbachtal nature reserve extend ( CDDA no. 318562; designated 2002; 1.1076 km² in size).
