Hessenstrasse

Exposed piece of Hessenstrasse near Reichenberg

As Hessenstraße one is from the late Middle Ages street called the Hessian areas on Middle Rhine with the Hesse-Kassel association. Large parts of this old road through the Taunus , especially between St. Goar and the Eiserne Hand crossroads , are of Celtic origin, as the many barrows suggest. Some routes were paved as cobblestone roads in Roman times .

course

The Hessenstraße begins in St. Goarshausen and immediately climbs up to the ridge ending above the city , the western Hintertaunus , between the Hasenbach and the Forstbach . There it reaches Patersberg , continues past Hof Offenthal , south and east around Reichenberg and Reitzenhain to the Galgenkopf . Up to this point the street is also called Römerstraße . In the north of Niederwallmenach and Lautert it leads over the Hohen Wald and the Kuhheck down to the Mühlbachtal at Hof Schwall , south of Nastätten . From here the Hessenstrasse immediately goes up again on a wooded ridge and is always at most a few hundred meters away from the state border to Hessen in the further course to the Roman fort in Holzhausen . At the fort, Hessenstraße crosses the Upper German-Raetian Limes and leads west of Berndroth to the Rettert forester's house and over the Wolfskopf to Katzenelnbogen . This established the road connection between two of the most important Hessian cities in the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen (St. Goar (from which you only have to cross the Rhine to get to St. Goarshausen) and Katzenelnbogen).

Hessenstraße leads from Katzenelnbogen via Rödelsberg and Steinkopf, leaves the western Hintertaunus and descends into the Aartal to Zollhaus and Hahnstätten . Leads further into the Kirberg hill country to Netzbach , Heringen , Neesbach and Dauborn . Runs over the ridge of the A3 down into the Goldenen Grund to Niederselters and crosses the Emsbach of the Idsteiner Senke . Then it climbs up in the eastern Hintertaunus to Haintchen as a high road , up to the historic “Eiserne Hand” intersection near Langenbach, which was probably very important at the time . From there it unites with the " Rennstraße " (also Celtic " Hünerstraße ") coming from the Vordertaunus and leads identically with this on ridges further north past the Hühnerküppel (traces of Celtic fortifications) , past Rohnstadt and the " Riesenburg " (Celtic ring castle) down into the Weiltal to Weilmünster (remains of old city walls, city or Roman tower) .

From there, the Hessenstrasse led via Möttau , Kraftsolms , over the Köhlerberg (formerly also called “Heerstrasse”) to the Napoleonstock. From this point on, the exact course of the road can no longer be determined, presumably it led via Dornholzhausen northwards in Wetzlar over the Lahn , past the Dünsberg on the Westfalenweg and on towards Kassel .
