Ergun Metin Ercins (born January 1, 1935 in Eskişehir , † July 21, 1986 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and coach. Through his work for Galatasaray Istanbul he is associated with these associations. He was an important part of the Galatasaray team that had a strong influence on Turkish football in the 1950s and 1960s with players like Metin Oktay , Kadri Aytaç , Suat Mamat and Turgay Şeren .

Player career

The first years

Ercins started playing football in his hometown Eskişehir in 1950. Here he played until 1953 for the local football club Eskişehir Gençlik . He then moved in 1953 with Eskişehir Şekerspor to one of the most successful clubs in Ercins' hometown Eskişehir. At the time of his move to Şekerspor, there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara , Izmir , Adana , Trabzon and Eskişehir, of which the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. Şekerspor played in the Eskişehir Futbol Ligi (German: Eskişehir Football League ) and was one of the more successful clubs in the league with a championship they won. Ercins played one season in this league for Şekerspor. In the summer he took part with the Turkish U-18 national team in the 1954 UEFA youth tournament and finished this tournament with his team in fourth place. This made him noticed by the larger clubs and became one of the most sought-after young players in the 1954 summer transfer period.

Galatasaray Istanbul

For the 1954/55 season Ercins moved to the traditional clubs Galatasaray Istanbul . Despite his young age of 19, Ercins was immediately used in the starting line-up by head coach Gündüz Kılıç , a former legend of Galatasaray, and played 17 of the 18 possible league games for his club. With his club, he finished the season as a champion of the Istanbul professional league and won his first title at club level. In August 1955, Ercins had to be operated on due to an injury and was out for almost the entire season. Only on the last day of the match did he make his comeback in the derby against arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul. His team managed to defend their title in the Istanbul championship this season. In the following season Ercins missed with his team the title defense and was runner-up behind arch-rivals Fenerbahçe. In this season Ercins was not undisputed as a regular due to injury and completed eight of the possible 18 league games. After he had completed almost all of his team's league games by November 1957, he had to undergo another operation in January 1958 because of a meniscus injury and was out until April. He then returned to the team and completed all of his team's remaining games. After the successful coach Kılıç failed to defend the title last season, a new coach, Musa Sezer , took over the team for the new season , but was replaced after nine game days by the Scot George Dick . Under this coach Ercins' team reached the league championship in the 1957/58 season and ended the next season behind Fenerbahçe as runners-up.

From the spring of 1959 Ercins took part with the team in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the Istanbul professional league , as the highest Turkish league. In the first season of the Millî Lig , the championship was played in two rounds. In the first round, the league system was divided into two separate groups. In the second round, the two group winners decided the championship among themselves in a final with a return leg. Ercins took part with his team in the group red in the competition and finished the group stage as first. Then the team played with Fenerbahçe in a return game from the first Turkish championship and lost to their arch rivals. Ercins played almost all of his team's games. For the second season of this league, Dick was replaced by Italian coach Leandro Remondini after three untitled seasons . Under this coach, Ercins kept his regular place and completed all competitive games for his club. His team awarded the championship this season, far behind in 3rd place in the table, to Beşiktaş Istanbul .

After the club had remained without a championship title for four years, Gündüz Kılıç, the coach with whom the club was able to become Istanbul champions twice in the mid-1950s, was hired in the summer of 1960. Kılıç, who had also been responsible for the commitment Ercins', put him in the Milli-Lig season 1960/61 in almost all league games. The team played under Gündüz 'leadership this season until the last matchday with arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the Turkish championship and then awarded it with a point difference. The following season, the season 1961/62 , ended Ercins' team by winning the first Turkish championship in the club's history. This season Ercins played an important role in the team planning of Kılıç and again completed almost all competitive games.

After this success, Ercins refused a contract extension with Galatasaray, tried in the summer of 1962 to switch to arch rivals Fenerbahçe and even signed a two-year contract with him. But after Fenerbahçe was not prepared to pay the transfer fee of 45,000 Turkish Lira required by Galatasaray , this contract lost its validity. Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Ercins extended his contract with Galatasaray for another two years. In the 1962/63 season his team managed to defend their title in the Turkish championship. Ercins' team also won the newly introduced Turkish Football Cup this season , becoming both the first Turkish cup winner and the first Turkish double winner. In addition, in the 1962/63 European Cup, the quarter-finals and thus the best placement of a Turkish team to date in this competition in particular and in all European club competitions in general was achieved. In the quarterfinals, the team failed to AC Milan . Ercins only completed the games in the European Cup in the first half of this season and only began to play continuously again in the first half of the season. After he last shows no satisfactory performance, he was suspended by Kılıç in mid-April 1963 from the squad and missed the rest of the season.

In the new season Ercins failed to assert himself as an undisputed regular player, but he was regularly used by the coaching staff. This season, the team in the league missed the connection to the top of the table and finished the league in 3rd place in the table. In the next season, however, he was unable to build on his earlier performance. Instead, he only played two league games in the season. Also in the 1964/65 season, his team gambled away the championship. In the last two seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65 the team won the Turkish Football Cup for the second and third time. This also made Ercins part of the team that won the Turkish Football Cup three times in a row for the first time. After the team had remained untitled for the last two years in the Turkish championship, a revision at Galatasaray was decided in the summer of 1967. For the defense and midfield, the players Ahmet Tuna Kozan , Ergün Acuner , Ertan Gürkan , Tuncer İnceler , Ergün Acuner and Bekir Türkgeldi were committed to and from the existing squad some players were put on the sales list, including Ercins. Galatasaray declared that he would not want to charge a transfer fee for Ercins.

Vefa Istanbul and Ispartaspor

After Ercins had hardly received any stakes at Galatasaray for the last two seasons and was most recently put on the sales list, he moved to city and league rival Vefa Istanbul in the summer of 1965 together with his long-time teammate Candemir Berkman . At this club, he immediately established himself as a top performer and completed all league games by December 1965. In the game of December 26, 1965 against the capital city representative MKE Ankaragücü , Ercins broke his arm. It was not until February 1966 that he was able to play a league game again, but fell out of the rest of the season after this game. In the next season he made only four games for Vefa.

After his career had remained undocumented in the 1967/68 season, he took over as player-coach for the second division Ispartaspor , played here for a year and then ended his career.

National team

Ercins began his career with the Turkish national teams in 1954 with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team. As part of the UEFA youth tournament in 1954, Ercins was nominated in the tournament line-up of the Turkish U-18 selection and played almost all of his team's tournament games. In the group stage of the tournament held in Germany , the Turkish selection confidently prevailed against Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg as first in the table and reached the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the team met host Germany. Ercins' team lost 2-1 to the team around striker Uwe Seeler after a hard-fought game and had to play against Argentina in the game for third place. The team lost this game 1-0 and finished the tournament fourth.

In 1957 Ercins was nominated for the Turkish national team in a test match against the Polish national team by the Turkish national coach László Székely and made his international debut in this match.

In 1958 and 1959 he played for the second selection of the Turkish national team , the Turkish B national team.

He made his last international match on November 27, 1960 against the Bulgarian national team .

Coaching career

In his last season as a football player, he worked at Ispartaspor as a player- coach and ended the season with the club in 3rd place in the table. For the new season he took over the Istanbul second division club Feriköy SK . He supervised this until the end of the season and then stepped down from his position.

death

Ercins died on July 21, 1986. He was buried the next day after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Moda Mosque in Karacaahmet Cemetery.
