Ernst-Otto Berk (born April 2, 1952 in Hachenburg ) is a retired Brigadier General . D. of the army of the Bundeswehr and was most recently deputy commander of the southern division .

Military career

Berk joined the German Armed Forces on October 4, 1971 at Telecommunications Battalion 5 in Diez . After training as an officer , from 1976 to 1980 he was a platoon leader and intelligence officer ( S2 ) with the 330 telecommunications battalion in Koblenz . He was then transferred to Hanover , where he served as a company commander in the local telecommunications battalion 1 until 1983 .

From 1983 to 1985 Berk completed the 26th general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and was then employed as an operations study officer (G3) at the Office for Studies and Exercises of the Bundeswehr in Bergisch Gladbach until 1987 . He then took over the post of Operations Officer (G3) under Brigadier General Rainer Thiel on the staff of the 13th Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Wetzlar . From 1989 to 1991 he was employed as a NATO intelligence officer (G2) at the headquarters of the Central Army Group in Heidelberg .

In 1991 Berk took over a command of the troops with the Telecommunications Battalion 12 in Veitshöchheim . In 1993 he moved to the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn , where he was advisor for military policy in the command staff of the armed forces (FüS III 1). In 1994 he became advisor for military policy in the office of State Secretary Jörg Schönbohm and served there until 1996. From 1996 to 1998 Berk was deployed in Brussels as an operations staff officer at NATO's international military staff and then took over the post of head of the Partnership for Peace staff member until 2000 . In 2000 he was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin , where he served as head of the department for military policy foundations (FüS III 1) until 2003.

On March 27, 2003, he took over command of Panzer Grenadier Brigade 1 in Hildesheim as the last commander before the dissolution until April 13, 2006 . During this time he was with the brigade from 15 January until 27 July 2005 at the foreign deployment in Afghanistan as part of ISAF VII and served there as a commander of the German contingent use and was also deputy commander of the Kabul Multinational Brigade . In April 2005 he was appointed Brigadier General.

From May 1, 2006 to April 2009, Berk was Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Joint Experimentation, Exercises and Assessment at NATO's Allied Command Transformation Headquarters in Norfolk , Virginia . April 22, 2009 Berk took over from Brigadier General Reinhard Wolski the post as Deputy Commander and Commander of Division troops of Airmobile Operations Division in Veitshöchheim under the command of Major General Erhard Drews . In October 2014, Berk handed over the duties of the deputy commander to his successor, Brigadier General Andreas Hannemann , and retired on November 1, 2014.

Berk's medals and decorations include the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in gold and silver, the Bundeswehr Medal (ISAF) and the Commendation Medal of the US Army . He is married and has two sons.
