Life

Ernst Gronow was born the son of a businessman and silk merchant in Greifswald. After graduating from high school, he studied law in Leipzig , Heidelberg , Berlin and Greifswald. From 1878 he received his practical training at courts in Barth , Stralsund, Greifswald and Frankfurt am Main . After a year as a trainee lawyer, he was appointed assessor. A year later he applied for the post of councilor in Stralsund. On July 3, 1884, he was introduced to the post, which was occupied for life. In 1890 he was appointed syndic of the city. Because of health problems, he spent two months in Italy in 1895 . After the death of Carl Friedrich Tamms on January 30, 1898, Gronow applied for the office of First Mayor and was introduced to the office in the same year. On May 27, 1906, Gronow was awarded the title of "Lord Mayor" in recognition of his achievements and on the occasion of his 25th anniversary in service. During the November Revolution , Gronow was imprisoned by the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council , which hit him very personally.

In 1923 Gronow was accused of having personally enriched himself as a provisional member of the St. Annen and Brigitten monastery . In the so-called "flour affair", members of the monastery management are said to have enriched themselves by reselling cheaply purchased flour. The Stralsund citizens also demanded Gronow's resignation from the provisional arrangement and the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against him. It is not known how the affair ended. Gronow retired in 1924. On December 6, 1924 he was made an honorary citizen of Stralsund .

Ernst Gronow died after a serious illness. He was buried with the highest honors in the Knieperfriedhof St. Jürgen .

The fire brigade (1910), the Hansa school (1913) and the Stralsund city theater were established under Gronow's aegis . He had the city forest reforested and the Sundpromenade built. Gronow was chairman of the supervisory board of the Stralsund-Tribsees railway company. He belonged to the Prussian manor house from 1899 on presentation of the city of Stralsund . He was also a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Pomerania .
