The Estadio Ciudad de Valencia ( Valencian and officially: Estadi Ciutat de València ) is a football stadium in the Spanish city of Valencia , Valencian Community . The facility is the home ground of the UD Levante football club . The sports facility, which is located at Calle San Vicente de Paúl 44, has a capacity of 26,354 spectators with 296 VIP seats.
history
The facility was inaugurated on September 9, 1969 by then President Antonio Román . Since then it has undergone a number of name changes. Before the current name, the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia was called “Nou Estadi”. Levante used to play his home games at the Estadio de Vallejo .
In May 2010, the club and the city of Valencia decided to demolish the stadium. Through the associated purchase of the property on which a new residential area is to be built by the city, the association can avoid a possible insolvency (the club had an estimated 90 million euros in debt at the time ). At the same time, the city and the association announced the construction of a new home for the club. The new stadium will have a capacity between 12,000 and 15,000 spectators and will also be available for general sporting events in the city of Valencia. It is still unclear where this new stadium will be built. During the construction phase of the new stadium, the club's home games are being held in the Estadio Mestalla of city rivals Valencia CF.
The stadium was renovated in 1997 and 2016. During the last renovation work, the stadium structure was refurbished and the entire seating was replaced. From 2007 to 2010 a shopping center was built behind the opposite stand , with part of the stadium area with tennis courts and parking spaces making way for the new building.
At the end of 2018, plans to renovate the stadium were published. Work should begin the following year. The erection of steel pillars around the stadium only started in January 2020. They should support the new roof with wire ropes and a compression ring around the stadium, which covers all spectator seats in the stands. As soon as the supports are inside and outside, the roof can be started to be raised. During the work, the UD Levante is playing its home games at the Estadio Olímpico Camilo Cano in La Nucia . At the beginning of July the old roof over the main stand was removed. The construction company Grupo Bertolín has agreed to carry out the work in just 17 weeks. In addition to an LED - floodlights , a new sound system installed and large video display boards (23.5 x 5 m) and laid a new pitch. The renovations should be completed by October of that year and should cost around 17 million euros. This is the first phase of the renovation. The second phase includes the renovation of the interior of the stadium, especially the main stand. When this is completed, the venue will have a new, modern facade. The renovations should cost a total of 30 million euros.
