Evangelical Church Messel
The Evangelical Church Messel is a Protestant parish church in Messel in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse .
Architecture and history
The Protestant Church of Messel at Langgasse 6 was built in 1812/1813 using a medieval tower and parts of the choir . The building was built according to plans by the master builder Michael Spieß. The layout of the structure is arranged in an east-west direction. The hall church has a polygonal 3/8 end. The simple facade is structured by three long, arched, closed windows . Under the middle window of the south wall there is a simple sandstone portal with classical entablature . The window frames are made of red sandstone. The tower on the west side of the church has two floors and is divided by a cornice. The church tower is crowned by a pressed, double-curved hood with an octagonal lantern . On the upper floor of the tower there are two-part pointed arch windows with tracery . The entrance to the church is on the ground floor of the tower. The roof of the church has a beaver tail covering . The tower has a slate cover .
The flat-roofed interior with a high throat has a uniform classicist frame. In the nave there is a three-sided gallery with closed parapet fields . The gallery rests on round wooden pillars . In the choir of the church there is a three-sided gallery that rests on square columns. There are glass doors between the pillars . In the center of the choir - under a baroque organ - is the hexagonal pulpit body in a typical pulpit altar arrangement.
Former cemetery
Two tombstones have been preserved in the former cemetery surrounding the church .
Opposite the main portal, one of the two gravestones is set into the churchyard wall.
The other tombstone - the so-called murder stone - is on the north wall. The murder stone commemorates a hunter's murder of a teacher's son in 1752 . The deed is represented by a sculpture on the tombstone.
