Evergreen Marine named unexpectedly strong winds as the reason for the agglomeration. According to the company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, there were two pilots on board. According to the media, the contractual responsibility for damage from accidents in the Suez Canal lies with the captain of the ship in question.

The ship was fifth in a convoy heading north, with fifteen ships behind when it ran aground. As this happened in a section of the canal with only one fairway, traffic was blocked in both directions, resulting in a congestion of over 300 ships and a daily loss of cargo worth over nine billion US dollars . The companies Nippon Salvage Co. from Japan and Smit Internationale from the Netherlands were commissioned with the recovery .

As of March 25, 2021 in addition to several smugglers who worked cutting-head suction-backhoe Mashhour of the Suez Canal Authority from obtaining the container ship again.

Speaking at a news conference on March 27, Admiral Osama Rabie, chairman of the SCA, said weather conditions were “not the main reasons” for the ship to bottom out, adding, “There may have been technical or human errors ... all of these factors will become clear in the investigation. "

Position of the Ever Given for inspection in the Great Bitter Lake on OpenSeaMap

On March 29, 2021 around 3 p.m. local time, the Ever Given was exposed again during spring floods with the help of excavators and tugs and made ready to drive. The ship was brought to the Great Bitter Lake for inspection with the help of a tug . After the canal had been checked for possible damage, shipping was resumed at 7 p.m. local time. By that day, the number of ships waiting to cross the canal had risen to around 370 according to the canal authority. On April 3, the canal authority announced that the backlog of numerous ships had been resolved. The last 61 of a total of 422 ships waiting in traffic jams would have passed the Suez Canal from both sides.

The ship was examined for damage and technical defects in the Great Bitter Lake. The examinations ended on April 14, 2021. After the closure of the canal ended, the canal authority announced a claim for damages for the cost of exempting the ship and the loss of revenue. The ship was confiscated to secure the claim, which eventually amounted to around 900 million US dollars. It is being held in the Great Bitter Lake , including its cargo and crew .

End of April 2021 announced the cruise line with the general average to a redistribution of damage and commissioned a London law firm with the recovery of guarantee to their customers. At the same time, the shipping company appealed against the seizure of the ship to an Egyptian court.
