The Express Samina ( Greek Εξπρές Σαμίνα ) was a Greek RoRo ferry that sank in the Aegean Sea on September 26, 2000 after a collision with a rock .
history
The ship was built in France in 1966 ( hull number : F23) and delivered to Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in June of that year . It was used on ferry routes in the Mediterranean ( Nice - Corsica and Marseille - Algeria ). With the merger of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique with the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte to the Compagnie Générale Trans-Mediterranéenne, which became the Société nationale maritime Corse Méditerranée in 1976 , the ship came to the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte to the Compagnie Générale Trans-Mediterranéenne in the summer of 1969 .
At the end of 1981 the ship was sold and renamed Golden Verginia . It was only used between the ports of Brindisi , Piraeus and Haifa .
In 1988 the ship went to Greece to the Piraeus-based company Agapitos Bros, which used it in the Aegean Sea. On November 18, 1999, the Greek company Minoan Flying Dolphins bought the ship and renamed it Express Samina . It was also used in the Aegean by Hellas Ferries, a subsidiary of Minoan Flying Dolphins.
Technology and equipment
The ship was of two sixteen-cylinder - diesel engines of the French manufacturer Pielstick with a capacity of 10,945 together kW driven. It reached a speed of up to 21 knots .
The ferry initially had a passenger capacity of 1442 people. Later it was approved for up to 1,300 people. 79 cabins were available for 256 passengers.
There was space for 170 cars on the vehicle deck, which was accessible via a rear ramp .
Marine casualty
The Express Samina was on the evening of 26 September 2000 the road to Parikia on the Cycladic -Insel Paros when she collided with the island upstream Portes rocks and sank. 82 of the 533 people who were on board died. Stormy winds ( 7–8 Beaufort ) made the rescue work difficult, in which fishing boats, ships of the Greek coast guard and also ships and helicopters of the Royal Navy participated.
The ship's captain, who is said to have been watching a football game at the time of the accident, and four crew members were arrested after the accident. The 62-year-old ship owner of the Express Samina took his own life as a result of the accident in November 2000.
In 2006 five crew members of the Express Samina were sentenced to several years imprisonment for manslaughter and negligence .

In an episode of the documentary series Crash Scene Investigation , a spin-off of the series Mayday - Alarm im Cockpit , the course of the accident is shown.
