FEI Nations Cup 2017 (dressage riding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2017 in dressage (2017 FEI Nations Cup ™ Dressage) was the fifth season of the Nations Cup for dressage riders .

Course of the tournament series

The season calendar showed little change compared to the previous year: The season ended with the British Nations Cup tournament Dressage at Hickstead , which had been canceled the previous year. With the end of the tournament tradition in Odense , the Danish Nations Cup tournament was relocated to Uggerhalne near Aalborg . A planned Nations Cup tournament in May in Kiev did not take place, so the season consisted of seven stages.

The tournaments were again advertised as CDIOs at 3 *, 4 * or 5 * level. The regulations did not change compared to 2016, the organizers had three different modes for the Nations Cup to choose from:

  • The result of the Grand Prix de Dressage (three or four riders per team) was based on the results from the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (one or two riders per team, only one freestyle result per team counts for the overall ranking ) added,
  • The Olympic team competition mode: Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial counted for the Nations Cup (only permitted for CDIO 5 *) or
  • Different tender (only outside Europe, approval by the FEI required)

The Nations Cup tournaments were held in the period from March 21 to July 30, 2017. Points were awarded based on the placement, staggered according to the category of the tournament (the winning team receives 5 * 15 points for a CDIO, 10 points for a CDIO 3 * ).

The stages

1st stage: United States

Again the only non-European stage of the Nations Cup was the US Nations Cup. The Nations Cup tournament, a CDIO 3 *, took place at the start of the season from March 21 to 26, 2017. The venue was Wellington in Florida, this was the 11th week of the local dressage series Global Dressage Festival .

Special regulations were used for the Nations Cup: the teams did not only start at Grand Prix level. Instead came the riders in the Grand Prix de Dressage either and in the Grand Prix Spécial or in the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediaire I at. In order to take into account the difference in difficulty, the results of the Grand Prix Tour were increased by a factor of 1.5 percent per rider.

The goal of allowing more nations to participate was not met. Unlike in previous years, only three teams were at the start. Each team had at least one rider who competed in the Grand Prix Tour. The hosts even put on a team that consisted entirely of Grand Prix starters. The victory went to Canada just ahead of the United States, while Spain came in third.

Annotation:

aSince the Nations Cup regulations stipulate a minimum participation of four national teams. Since this was not the case in Wellington, the result does not count towards the overall standings.

2nd test: France

After a break of almost two months, the Nations Cup season continued with its second stage. This was the French Nations Cup tournament, which was held in Compiègne as in the previous year . The CDIO 5 * tournament took place from May 18-21, 2017.

Seven teams took part in the Nations' Prize, endowed with around 25,000 euros. The first variant was chosen as the mode, in which all three tests at Grand Prix level counted for the Nations Cup. The rule that both results from the Grand Prix Spécial are included in the ranking of each nation caused Belgium and France to fall back to the last two places. Both nations had two results from the Grand Prix Freestyle, but one of their riders each gave up in the Grand Prix Spécial. Great Britain took the lead ahead of Sweden and the Netherlands by a margin.

3rd test: Denmark

Denmark, which only joined the Nations Cup of dressage riders last year as the host country, got a new venue for its Nations Cup tournament. So far, in addition to the Nations Cup tournament, a dressage world cup tournament has been held in Odense for ten years by the JBK Horse Show company and the Odense municipality . After this cooperation ended in 2016, Uggerhalne in Aalborg Municipality was selected as the venue for the Dressage Nations Prize for 2017 . Here at the Uggerhalne Sportsride Club, where the Danish dressage rider Andreas Helgstrand is also based, the CDIO 4 * was held from June 1st to 5th, 2017.

In the Nations Cup, all riders had to compete in the Grand Prix; the second special stage was either the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) or the Grand Prix Freestyle. As far as four riders started for a team, the worse of the freestyle results was canceled. There were four teams at the start. While Denmark won by a clear margin, the other three teams were close in the result.

4th test: Netherlands

The venue for the Nations Cup in dressage and show jumping was also Rotterdam in 2017 . The Dutch Dressage Nations Cup took place as part of the CHIO Rotterdam from June 22 to 25, 2017 and was advertised as CDIO 5 *.

Here, too, the first tender variant for Nations Cups was used, in which the overall ranking is made up of the results of the Grand Prix (all riders), Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (other team riders).

In contrast to the other Nations Cups of the season, the Grand Prix served as a qualification test for the teams: only the best five teams in the Grand Prix could continue to take part in the Nations Cup. Belgium and France were not among the top five teams. Your riders could only take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle (number of starters limited to ten riders) or in a consolation Grand Prix test.

Several teams had to do without one of their starter pairs: Even before the Grand Prix, the German rider Bernadette Brune withdrew because her horse Spirit of the Age had not tolerated the transport and the high temperatures well. The United States went to the Grand Prix with four riders. There, however, Dawn White-O'Connor dropped out because her gelding Legolas (whom she took over from Steffen Peters after the 2016 Olympic Games ) was not clear. The Netherlands was also hit: while they had finished the Grand Prix with four results, Madeleine Witte-Vree's horse Cennin lost a horseshoe while riding before the Grand Prix Spécial. Accordingly, she did not take part in the test. However, since two results from the Grand Prix Spécial are required for the Nations Cup, the Dutch slipped back to last place.

The victory in the Nations Cup in Rotterdam went to the United States of America with a clear lead, despite the lack of a fourth horse-rider pair. Second place went to Sweden. The remaining German team, consisting of a couple with an inexperienced horse (the 9-year-old mare Fine Spirit ) and two couples who lagged behind their best results (Anabel Balkenhol with Dablino and Jan-Dirk Gießelmann with Real Dancer ) came up with the third rank.

5th test: Sweden

At the end of the season, the Nations Cup stages followed in quick succession in July 2017. The first of three Nations Cup tournaments on three consecutive weekends was the Falsterbo Horse Show. The Swedish Nations Cup tournament in dressage was advertised as CDIO 5 *. It was carried out in Skanör med Falsterbo from July 13th to 16th, 2017.

The first variant was chosen as the mode, but with the special feature that all teams were only allowed to consist of three riders and their horses. Thus all Nations Cup riders started in the Grand Prix, two riders per team in the Grand Prix Spécial and the third rider in the Grand Prix Freestyle. So there were no deleted results, all results were included in the team evaluation.

Four teams competed in the Nations Cup. A German team was planned as the fifth team. However, since the nominated rider Andrea Timpe fell the weekend before, the team did not materialize. The Swedes already dominated the Grand Prix, their riders came in first to third here. In the Grand Prix Freestyle, the Swede Patrik Kittel won by almost six percent and in the Grand Prix Spécial the first two places were occupied by riders from the hosts. The United States remained unsuccessful as one of their riders had already retired from the Grand Prix.

6. Examination: Germany

The second week of the CHIO Aachen was held from July 18 to 23, 2017 , during which the German Nations Cup of Dressage has its place. The organizers of the CDIO 5 * tournament were the only ones to decide this season to host the second (classic) Nations Cup mode consisting of Grand Prix and Grand Prix Spécial. The teams could bring up to four horse-rider pairs to the start, and the three best results from both tests were included in the Nations Cup classification.

The Grand Prix of the CDIO 5 * was held on July 20, the Grand Prix Spécial two days later. The venue for both tests was the Deutsche Bank Stadium in Aachen.

While Great Britain and the Netherlands did not send their strongest teams to Aachen and largely achieved results below 70 percent (the Dutch even missed qualifying for the Grand Prix Spécial), the Nations Cup in Aachen resulted in a duel: Germany entered aiming to win his home Nations Cup again, but in the 2017 season Showtime FRH (Dorothee Schneider) and Desperados FRH (Kristina Bröring-Sprehe) were missing two of their top performers from the previous year. The main competitor was the team of the United States of America, of which Laura Graves in particular had competed with the aim of beating the world number one Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD with Verdades .

In addition to Sönke Rothenberger / Cosmo and Isabell Werth / Weihegold OLD , who were already at the start here last year , the German team included the 11-year-old Sammy Davis Jr. , who with Dorothee Schneider had only won his first international Grand Prix in March 2017 (and this won directly) and Hubertus Schmidt with the 14-year-old Imperio . While Sammy Davis Jr. remained in the performance range of the last tournaments with 74.529 percent in the Grand Prix, Hubertus Schmidt had bad luck: In the first strong trot Imperio jerked his head, the entire ride was not as harmonious as in previous tournaments. Complemented by strong performances from Rothenberger and Werth, the German team was already clearly in the lead after the Grand Prix.

In the Grand Prix Spécial Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD again achieved a result of over 80 percent, but with a mistake in the two- man substitutions and a clock error in the trot reinforcement, points were left behind for the best result. Laura Graves took advantage of this opportunity, on her 30th birthday she achieved just under 82 percent with Verdades and thus won the test. Sönke Rothenberger was also aiming for a result of over 80 percent, but Cosmo was shocked when he took a strong step, in connection with sub-optimal single changes, this gave third place in the individual evaluation with 78.314 percent. With a result of over 75 percent from Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr. , Germany was able to hold onto first place in the final result. Hubertus Schmidt again put the strike result after a ride, so that Helen Langehanenberg, who started in the CDI 4 * tour with Damsey FRH, was given priority in the nomination for the European Championships.

7. Examination: United Kingdom

After the British Dressage Nations Cup tournament Dressage at Hickstead took place separately from the Royal International Horse Show in 2015 and was completely canceled in 2016, it returned to its original date in 2017. The last stage of the Nations Cup of dressage riders was held at Dressage at Hickstead from July 27th to 30th, 2017, at the same time as the show jumping Nations Cup.

The tournament held in Hickstead was advertised as CDIO 3 *. The organizers decided to choose the first of the three tender variants for the Nations Cup, so that the Nations Cup result was composed of the results of the Grand Prix (three or four riders per team), Grand Prix Spécial (two team riders each) and Grand Prix Freestyle .

After the Grand Prix, France was clearly in the lead. Their three riders counting were the only team to come to over 70 percent. In addition, Pierre Volla was the only rider to achieve a result of over 72 percent in the Grand Prix. This seemed to continue in the second part of the Nations Cup, in the Grand Prix Spécial on Saturday, France also got the best results. But in the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday, the Dutchman Jean-René Luijmes delivered by far the best result of the team riders. France's best team rider in the freestyle, Ludovic Henry, achieved an almost three percent lower result. But adding up the overall result was enough for France to win, with the Netherlands coming in second, 0.728 percent behind.

Overall rating

Only the four highest rating points per nation were included in the overall ranking. Only the United States was affected by this regulation and was the only nation to participate in all Nations Cups. With 52 points from four Nations Cups, Sweden clearly won the overall ranking of the 2017 Nations Cup series.
