The FH Joanneum ( proper spelling in capital letters FH JOANNEUM ) is a university of applied sciences with three locations in Graz, Kapfenberg and Bad Gleichenberg in Styria.
The FH Joanneum has 4,700 students, around 300 full-time teaching staff and academic staff, as well as around 960 lecturers. It offers courses of study with a focus on economics, technology, health science and social science. It is one of three universities of applied sciences in Austria that do not charge tuition fees. The University of Applied Sciences is accredited as FH Joanneum Gesellschaft mbH , this company is held by the State of Styria as the majority shareholder, other shareholders are the regional companies Joanneum Research and Styrian Economic Development .
history
The FH Joanneum was founded in 1995 by Joanneum Research GesmbH and the State of Styria . In 2001 medical courses started on the Bad Gleichenberg campus and in 2007 the FH Joanneum received the status of a technical college.
Departments / courses of study
There are 47 bachelor's and master's programs as well as ten postgraduate master’s programs at six departments and 25 institutes. The six departments are:
- Applied computer science
- Building, Energy & Society
- Engineering
- Health studies
- management
- Media & design
The courses are offered full-time, part-time or in an organizational form that is possible for a job. Extra-occupational courses are either blocked for a few weeks a year or take place in the evening and usually include a high proportion of e-learning. Degree programs that make it possible to work have set days of attendance (e.g. Wednesday to Friday); the profession can already be practiced on the remaining days of the week. At the FH Joanneum there are also three courses "Mobile Software Development", "Production Technology and Organization" and "Engineering and Production Management", which are organized in the form of a dual course . This means that students study at the FH for a few months and then work for a company for a few months.
Projects
- "Joanneum racing team" : Every year, students in the "Vehicle Technology", "Industrial Design", "Information Design", "Electronics and Computer Engineering", "Production Technology & Organization", "Journalism & Public Relations" and " Physiotherapy “a whole car. The infrastructure such as the workshop and test field is available at the FH. The project is anchored in the "Vehicle Technology" course and is supported by sponsors. With the car they then take part in the "Formula Student" and other FSAE competitions. The greatest successes are overall victories in 2006 and 2015 at Formula SAE Italy and 3rd overall places in 2007, 2015 and 2016 in Hockenheim, at Formula Student UK in 2008 in Silverstone and in 2015 in Michigan.
- "Blank" magazine and the associated website, which are created every year by students of "Journalism and PR".
Initiatives
- Every year the FH Joanneum takes part in the KinderUni Graz, where children can take part in various workshops and lectures.
- In 2010, the Bad Gleichenberg location of the University of Applied Sciences received the Sustainability Award from the Federal Ministry of Science and Research and the Ministry of Life and was named a UN Decade Project for Education for Sustainable Development by the Austrian UNESCO .
- Open barcamps on various topics have been held at the FH Joanneum since 2008. The so-called COSCAMP is regularly carried out by the course content strategy.

research Institute
The "ZML - Center for Innovative Learning Scenarios" develops learning scenarios that are based on the support of technology or web applications. These include B. communication in networks or 3D simulations. In the ZML, however, e-learning scenarios are also researched. The ZML deals with z. B. with the user friendliness of different interfaces ( usability ) or with "learning through computer games", in which the effect of educational games on the PC is researched in various projects .
Criticism of approbation of racial theories
In 2018, a bachelor thesis in speech therapy was approved at the FH Joanneum and rated “very good”, which represents pseudo-scientific racial theories : “According to scientific criteria, it can be determined that the intelligence quotient of Europids (Europeans) is on average higher than that of Negrids (Africans) (...) and at the same time lower than that of Mongolids (East Asians) [...] Half of the middle speaking voices of the Turks are, by German standards, pathological. "The title of the work should originally be" Rasse und Voice «Was defused on the advice of an external expert - at the time a student at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz - to» intra-species variation of the human vocal tract and the voice «. A member of the examination committee at the University of Applied Sciences and the second reviewer of the student's second bachelor thesis, Ralf Vollmann from the Institute for Linguistics at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz , had published joint work with the author. After internal references to the problematic content, the technical college obtained a statement from the documentation archive of the Austrian resistance . In it, the work was described as scandalous and as an "attempt to rehabilitate pseudo-scientifically racist work on the basis of the racial nomenclature that was frowned upon as a result of the Nazi era" and as scientifically questionable, because "does not go beyond the level of contradicting hypotheses, who lack a scientific-empirical underpinning and evidence ”, but they are“ within the legal framework ”; the author is known in right-wing extremist circles. After the scandal became known, the University of Applied Sciences declared that it would not take any further action against the student because the work was "legally impeccable". In an e-mail to the DÖW, the FH Joanneum also wrote that they did not want to take any further steps because they fear attacks from the right-wing scene, since the author »in the event of a consequence has a good network in the legal and media direction and this possibly even more unpleasant consequences than a silent acceptance of the work «. The first assessor said afterwards that he had not noticed anything of "racist or even forbidden" content because he did not know that the author was to be assigned to the right-wing scene. Rudolf Muhr , also from the Institute for Linguistics at the Karl-Franzens University, said: “It cannot be that racists are encouraged at the university. This completely unscientific work must be denied. «The responsible state councilor for science Barbara Eibinger-Miedl commissioned a further external investigation.
College of Applied Sciences
The college of applied sciences was set up to carry out and organize teaching and examinations. Uwe Trattnig is the head of the college.
Student representation
The student union ( ÖH ) of the university exists since the winter semester 2005/2006 and is called öh joanneum.
