Federico Cesi (cardinal)
Federico Cesi (born July 2, 1500 in Rome , † January 28, 1565 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He was the son of the Roman nobleman Angelo Cesi and his wife Francesca (or Franceschina) Cardoli. His older brother Paolo Emilio Cesi became a cardinal as early as 1517. He was also related to the cardinals Pierdonato Cesi seniore , Bartolomeo Cesi and Pierdonato Cesi iuniore . Federico Cesi studied in Rome law and worked as a lawyer and then became a priest .
On June 12, 1523 he was appointed Bishop of Todi - with dispensation from the canonical age . He was ordained episcopate on September 22, 1538 in Rome by the Bishop of Bovino , Alfonso Oliva , sacristan of the Apostolic Palace ; Co- consecrators were Cristofor Spiriti , Bishop of Cesena , and Baldo Ferratini , Bishop of Lipari . Federico Cesi soon became a cleric in the Apostolic Chamber .
Pope Paul III created him in the consistory of December 19, 1544 as cardinal priest . Federico Cesi received the red hat and the titular church of San Pancrazio on January 9, 1545. On March 11, 1545 he renounced the episcopate in Todi and was 1549-1552 administrator of Caserta . Cardinal Cesi was a participant in the conclave 1549-1550 , the Pope Julius III. chose. He opted for the titular church of Santa Prisca on February 28, 1550 . He was also the administrator of Vulturara e Montecorvino (1550–1551) and Cremona (1551–1560). From January 7, 1555 to January 10, 1556 was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He was a participant in the first conclave of 1555 , which ended with the election of Pope Marcellus II . He also took part in the second conclave of the same year , from which Paul IV emerged as Pope.
He opted on September 20, 1557 for the cardinal class of the cardinal bishops and for the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . He took part in the 1559 conclave , from which Pius IV emerged as Pope. On May 18, 1562 he opted for the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati and on May 12, 1564 for the diocese of Porto e Santa Rufina and was subdean of the Holy Cardinals College .
Federico Cesi was buried in the church of Santa Caterina de 'Funari ; later his body was transferred to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
