Felix Sümmermann

Felix Sümmermann (born May 3, 1889 in Münster , † April 14, 1970 in Ahaus ) was a German lawyer.

Life

Sümmermann came from a Catholic family. His parents were the government architect Karl Sümmermann and Maria Schürmann, a great niece of Cardinal Melchior von Diepenbrock . He studied law before volunteering for field medical service during World War I. From the beginning of 1916 until the end of the war, he was employed as an artilleryman in the 6th Guards Regiment on the Western Front, including in front of Verdun . After the war he began a career in administration from 1919. In 1920 he was appointed acting head of the district office and in 1921 elected district administrator in the Ahaus district. After the seizure of power by the NSDAP he got because of his religious beliefs in conflict with the new regime, but retained his position. In 1940 he volunteered for military service to escape Nazi pressure, but had to end military service after a year and a half for health reasons.

He belonged to the Beck / Goerdeler shadow cabinet and, after a successful attack on Adolf Hitler, should have held the post of political sub-commissioner for Military District VI ( Münster ). This planning was carried out at the instigation of Ferdinand Freiherr von Lüninck without Sümmermann's knowledge. After the failure of the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he was arrested by the Gestapo . He was imprisoned in the Ravensbrück concentration camp , among other places , before he was released on February 16, 1945 without giving any reason.

After the Second World War , Sümmermann was reinstated as District Administrator von Ahaus by the British occupying forces at the urging of the acting District Administrator Clemens Freiherr von Oer . In 1946 he was elected chief district director and held this position until his retirement in 1955. The reconstruction of Ahaus Castle was one of his outstanding achievements. At and in Ahaus Castle , some sculptures created by the Siedlinghausen artist Eugen Senge plates were set up on his initiative . In 1947 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . From 1962 he was a corresponding member of the commission.

In September 1917 Sümmermann married Elisabeth Hellraeth from Münster. 2 daughters and 1 son resulted from this marriage.

According to him, since 2000 every three years by is Borken awarded Felix Sümmermann Award named for historic preservation.
