Fertőd [ ˈfɛrtøːd ] ( Croatian Herceško ) is a city in western Hungary , a few kilometers southeast of Lake Neusiedl on the border with Austria . The name is related to the Hungarian name of the steppe lake (Fertő-tó) , on the southern and eastern edges of which there is a fertile plain . Fertőd has about 3,400 inhabitants and was created in 1950 from the amalgamation of the communities Eszterháza (German: Esterhaus ) and Süttör (German: Schüttern ).
Attractions
The place is known for three things:
- Esterházy Palace on the outskirts . This well-known rococo castle of the earlier Esterházy princes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts many visitors as the Hungarian Versailles ,
- the nearby Fertő-Hanság National Park (236 km²), which also includes the southern swamps and the castle park. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 with Austria's Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park because of its flora and fauna ,
- a borderland cycle route around Lake Neusiedl, which has been developed for some time , connects the nearby Sopron (25 km) with the Seewinkel ( Pamhagen 10 km) or the vineyards in the Burgenland west of the lake. Even at the time of the visa-free “ goulash communism ” it attracted many athletes and people interested in culture.
