Fireman Sam (Original title: Fireman Sam or Sam Tân ) is a Welsh cartoon and animation series, which was developed in 1985 by the Cardiff- born cartoonist Rob Lee. The idea came from two firefighters from Kent . It was produced in parallel in Welsh and English and broadcast on S4C and the BBC . The English first broadcast took place two years later on November 17, 1987. More and more modern technology was used in new editions.

The series is about the professional firefighter Sam who works in the small fire station in the fictional Welsh town of Pontypandy. The episodes are about small accidents in which Sam always comes to the rescue as a savior in an emergency. The intention is to teach children about fire prevention and to encourage them to dial the emergency number in case of danger. Children between three and six years of age are to be addressed, which is why personal initiative in fighting fires or rescuing people is not shown or even suggested. The stories are simple and the number of people involved is kept low.

The series was made in three different types of production and sold in over 40 countries, especially the modern episodes from 2005 onwards.

Production history

1985-1994

The first four seasons were made with just a few dolls using the stop-motion method. The dolls did not move their mouths when they spoke, the facial expressions consisted only of eye and mouth changes. Sam's way to work was shown in the opening credits: an alarm clock with a blue light goes off, Sam puts on his firefighter's uniform, slides down the stairs straight into his boots and gets his helmet on electromechanically. A mechanical hand that he invented offers him a coffee. Then he is picked up by the fire truck.

The seasons consisted of 32 episodes with a length of about 10 minutes and the Christmas special with 20 minutes.

The theme song was:

When he hears the fire bell chime, Fireman Sam is there on time.
Putting on his coat and hat in less than seven seconds flat
He's always on the scene, Fireman Sam!
And his engine's bright and clean, Fireman Sam!
You cannot ignore, Sam is the hero next door!
Driving down the busy streets, greeting people that he meets
Someone could be in a jam, so hurry, hurry, Fireman Sam
He's always on the scene ...

In German: If he hears the fire alarm ringing, then firefighter Sam will be there on time. He puts on his coat and helmet in less than seven seconds. He's always there, Fireman Sam! And his fire truck is shiny and clean, Fireman Sam! You can't miss it, Sam is the hero next door! He drives through the busy streets, he greets people he meets. Someone could be in danger, so hurry up, hurry up firefighter Sam! He is always there ...

The first three seasons were also dubbed in German in 1990. The only dubbing speaker is Hans-Rainer Müller, who imitates all the voices. The order of the original squadrons was not kept, but rather reversed. Fireman Sam is always addressed as Fireman Sam in the German edition . The episodes appeared under the title Der kleine Feuerwehrmann only on VHS cassettes from Polyband & Toppic Video / WVG:

  1. The hero of Pontypandy
  2. There's something going on in Pontypandy
  3. Major alarm in Pontypandy
  4. It smokes and smokes in Pontypandy

Christmas special: blowing snow in Pontypandy

In the German edition, too, only the English title song is played.

2003-2005

The fifth season was produced by HIT-Entertainment with new dolls, also using the stop-motion method. However, the faces have changing facial expressions. The figure of the rescue helicopter pilot Tom Thomas from the mountain rescue service and the Flood family (craftsman Mike, nurse Helen and daughter Mandy) have been added. In the opening credits, which lasted a minute, the alarm was shown at the fire station: the alarm printer throws out a message, Sam takes his helmet, slides the pole down to the vehicle and drives off.

This season has 26 episodes and was dubbed in German.

The new English theme song was:

When he hears that fire alarm, Sam is always cool and calm.
If you're stuck, give him a shout, he'll be there to help you out.
So move aside, make way for fireman Sam,
cause he's gonna save the day - fireman Sam,
cause he's brave to the core. Sam is the hero next door!
If there's trouble he'll be there, underground or in the air!
Fireman Sam and all the crew, they'll be there to rescue you,
So move aside ...

The German title song was:

When he hears the siren, Sam doesn't feel bothered.
If something suddenly happens to you, it will come immediately - guaranteed.
Fireman Sam is admired and popular because he only exists once.
Are you looking for the bravest man in town, Sam lives next door.
Pontypandy's fire department would be lost without Sam.
But the whole crew also saves, deletes and grabs tightly.
Admired and popular ...

When you hear the word siren , you can see a bell.

2008

Seasons 6 and 7 were also produced by HIT Entertainment with computer animation . The appearance of the figures was largely retained. Due to the simpler production method, more figures could be added. Pontypandy is now by the sea and has a harbor, so the fire brigade also has a boat. The already known twins Sarah and James had parents: the fisherman Charlie and the landlady Bronwyn, who is called Gwendolyn in the German translation. Charlie is Sam's brother. The pizza maker Bella Lasagne pauses in these episodes.

The opening credits have been shortened to 30 seconds and corrected so that Sam only takes his helmet and puts it on after the slide bar in the car hall. The 26 episodes of each of the two seasons are shown on German television as the 6th season episodes 1 to 52. The 7th season can be seen as episodes 1 to 26 and the 6th season as 27 to 52 (with a swap).

Because of the shortening, only the first stanza of the title song was sung in English, but the text of the German title song was changed to:

Alarm, an emergency call comes in, fireman Sam is our man.
No matter what happens, he stays calm and focused.
Because he puts out every fire, yes Fireman Sam, he is known for that, yes Fireman Sam.
Whatever threatens you, Sam will help you in an emergency.
On land, in the water, in the air, Sam hears every call for help.
Sam and his crew are here, ready to help you.
Because …

The second stanza can only be heard in the film Pontypandy in Danger .

2012

Season 8 was equipped with additional figures and vehicles. So Sam now also has a quad called Merkur as an emergency vehicle. The fire brigade also has a quadrocopter with location sensors called Saturn . New is z. B. the Chinese family Chen and the mountaineer Moose. Pontypandy also has a steam train station. A single track route leads into the mountains. The rail-mounted Bessie fire engine , an old fire engine without tires that Steele restored, is in use there.

2014

Season 9 has been running on KiKa since May 7, 2016. In this the mission at sea was renewed. Now a whole coast guard station with the fire ship Titan and the jet ski Juno is available. New are Ben from the Coast Guard and the Sparkes family, whose girl is in a wheelchair.

2016

In February 2016, Channel 5 began airing season 10. The first broadcast of this season on KIKA began on October 18, 2018.

Pontypandy

The rural community has two real-life models: Pontypridd and Tonypandy , eight kilometers apart in Mid Glamorgan, South Wales. You are inland not far from Cardiff . According to the story, the fire station belongs to the headquarters in the real Newtown in County Powys. The nearby mountains allow the introduction of a mountain rescue service from the fifth season. From the sixth season onwards, Pontypandy is also at the sea, which means that there are also missions in the sea.

Fire station

The town's fire station is on a small hill, which is why it was spared during the flood. The office with the headquarters is to the left of the vehicle hall with two gates. On the first floor in the roof there is a lounge with kitchen. To the right of the site is a climbing tower that is also used for exercises. The two emergency vehicles Jupiter and Venus are in the vehicle hall . The rescue vehicle Jupiter, which is also equipped with a telescopic mast platform, stands on a turntable and - unrealistic - is only rotated in the direction of travel before departure. In the first few seasons the vehicle has the registration number J 999 (for "Jupiter" and the British fire service emergency number 999). Venus is a small all-terrain fire engine. Later in the episode there is a quad called Mercury and a drone called Saturn in the fire station. The classic Bessie fire engine can only drive on rails and is therefore not in the fire station, but directly at the train station. In the movie "Heroes in the Storm" the old fire station is closed and there is a mobile command post from which operations can be directed. When the new fire station is ready, Moose gives the fire fighters an off-road amphibious vehicle. It gets the name hydrus . There is also space for all vehicles in this new fire station. In the film "Attention Aliens" there is a new vehicle that occupies the last parking space in the fire station. It's a fire engine named Phoenix .

Sea Rescue Center (Coast Guard)

The coast guard initially has a vehicle. It's a rubber dinghy named Neptune. After the Coast Guard has been rebuilt, there are two more vehicles available. The fire ship Titan and the jet ski Juno. When the new coast guard was built, a helicopter landing pad was also built on which Wallaby 1, later also Wallaby 2, can land.

Mountain rescue center (mountain rescue service)

There are two vehicles in the mountain rescue service. On the one hand an all-terrain vehicle and on the other hand the Wallaby 1 helicopter. In the film "Attention Extra-Terrestrial", the mountain rescue service is rebuilt and a second helicopter is added to the fleet. The Wallaby 2 helicopter.

Savings price supermarket

The Sparpreis Supermarket is the only shop in all of Pontypandy. It is directed by Dilys Price.

Cod cafe

The Cod Cafe is the cafe of Sarah and James mother Gwendolyn Jones. It is the meeting point for all the residents of Pontypandy.

Bella's Cafe

Bella's Cafe is a pizzeria and ice cream parlor. It is run by the Italian Bella Lasagne.

characters

Fireman Sam Jones

He is the "hero next door" who can carry out almost all missions except diving. It symbolizes the local fire department; in the event of danger, the fire brigade is not called, but "Fireman Sam". As the title song says: Pontypandy's fire brigade would be lost without Sam . He drives the Jupiter fire engine . But he is also used as a flight and water rescuer. In addition, Sam invents useful things for work (thermometer for hay bales, grippers, ...) or for leisure (e.g. a popcorn machine, metal detector ). He is single, which is not surprising since he is not even available on his day off. In his meager free time he is busy growing vegetables in his garden bed. The last name Jones comes from one of the two ex-firefighters who came up with the idea for the series. A standard phrase is: " Saint Florian !" And "darn flying sparks" (in English "Great fires of London!"). The German speaker is Clemens Gerhard . Sam is the uncle of Sarah and James, so brother of Charlie Jones.

Fireman Elvis Cridlington

He is obviously not yet fully trained and is portrayed a bit dull. He constantly has problems with the main firefighter because of the resulting misunderstandings. Every now and then he drives the Jupiter fire engine . He wears Elvis Presley's hairstyle , enjoys singing, plays the guitar and cooks for his colleagues in the fire department kitchen. He's also in love with Penny until the computer-animated episodes. The German speaker is Oliver Böttcher .

Chief Fireman Norris Steele

The commander of the fire station is a correct officer who usually only addresses his crew by their last name, except for Sam. In the original, his rank is station officer . He also wears a white officer's helmet, which is why the translation is too low from the 6th season with the main firefighter ; it should be called fire chief, as is still the case in Season 5. He was previously an army officer with the Welsh Royal Fusiliers . In the event of an injury, he still works. In the first few seasons he personally leads every mission; in the later seasons, when he suddenly has the first name Norris, you see him less and less in action. He leads the exercises through which the viewer receives safety tips. Otherwise he almost always stays in his office on the radio to answer the emergency calls. When Elvis breaks his foot and Steele goes to work instead of him, he only causes problems. In the episode Norman Man and Atomic Boy , however, he is the hero. In some episodes he is even portrayed as childish. Standard phrases are: “Meiner Treu!” And “Every second counts!” (In English: “Action stations men!”) The German speaker is Achim Schülke .

Firefighter Penny Morris

Firefighter Penny Morris first appeared in Season 3 (in the episode "Dilys Losing Her Memory"). At first she is only a guest from the main town of Newtown. She has only been working in the Pontypandy fire station since season five. She drives the small fire engine Venus and the fire boat Neptune . She also trained as a fire service diver . She is very sporty and hikes in her free time. The German speaker is Simona Pahl .

Firefighter Ellie Phillips

The firefighter Ellie Phillips appears for the first time in the film "Heroes in the Storm". The enlargement of the fire station required more staff. The newly qualified firefighter was transferred to Pontypandy immediately after her exam.

Fireman Arnold McKinley

Fireman Arnold McKinley first appeared in the movie "Heroes in the Storm". The enlargement of the fire station required more staff. The newly qualified firefighter was transferred to Pontypandy immediately after his examination.

Chief Fire Chief Boyce

Boyce is Steele's manager from Newtown. He is originally Chief Fire Officer , which is the highest officer grade in the British fire service. The translation with main fire chief is also wrong here, he would have to be main fire inspector . He is a kind of district fire brigade commander who visits Pontypandy over and over again. In the film Pontypandy in Danger , he awards the medals for bravery and tries to poach Sam to run the fire station in Newtown.

Trevor Evans

The bus driver with West Indian roots was still an auxiliary firefighter in the old squadrons, but is later only on the road as a school bus driver. His bus is also the destination for many a mission. He does something with Norman Price every now and then, and his mother Dilys joins him as she seeks a relationship with Trevor. In his free time he is also a scout guide and takes the children on excursions into the forest.

Tom Thomas

From season 5, mountain rescuer Tom supports the fire brigade with a helicopter and an off-road vehicle. He is stationed in a mountain hut and also takes care of the wild animals. His paging name is Kangaroo 1 , but Wallaby 1 in the English original . The German speaker is Ole Jacobsen.

Ben Hooper

At the beginning of season 9, the heartthrob Ben enters the screen as the head of the sea rescue center. He drives the fire boat Titan.

Fire dog Schnuffi

From the 6th season, the fire brigade also has a Dalmatian who can search for people. In the English original it is called Radar , in the German dubbing Schnuffi .

Fireman Jerry Lee Cridlington

Fireman Jerry Lee Cridlington is Elvis Cridlington's cousin. When he visited his cousin Elvis, he helped out in the fire station in Pontypandy.

Norman Price

He is a seven-year-old boy who is the cause of many a fire service with his rash actions and pranks. However, in some cases he is also a savior. He wears glasses, loves skateboarding and has also "adopted" the lamb Woolly. He is the son of Dilys Price and has uncle Dyllan and cousin Derik (Derek) in Newtown. The German speaker is Lukas Sperber .

Dilys Price

Dilys, Norman's single mother, runs the local grocery store. She lives with her son directly above the shop. Although she is very convinced of Norman, she is well aware of his bad behavior. She is very scared, has a problem with foreign words (MP3 player, ...) and shows interest in Trevor, who does not reciprocate, but does something with her every now and then. From the 6th season the shop is no longer a corner shop , but the Spar-Preis-Supermarket (Cut Price Supermarket), whereby the word Price is ambiguous in English and describes both the price and the family name.

The Twins

Sarah and James Jones are Sam's niece and nephew and, unlike Norman, are better educated, but in the 2008 season they also cause emergency situations with their arguments. In the sixth season, the twins have parents who run the cod café. The German voice-over artist for Sarah is Kim Mayhew and the voice-over artist for James is Henry Schneider.

Mandy Flood

From season 5, Norman has a playmate. Mandy is the daughter of Mike and Helen. She inherited her mother's skin color and frizzy hair. She is happy to take care of the dog Schnuffi, who once saved her father.

Mike Flood

The craftsman Mike is an all-rounder who repairs almost everything in Pontypandy from season 5. He is a car mechanic, plumber, carpenter, plumber, locksmith and painter, but is sometimes quite clumsy. Again and again Sam has to save him from a roof.

Helen Flood

Helen Flood is the nurse Helen who has Caribbean roots. She is out and about in a small car with a green cross and looks after patients on the move. The family house is just outside the village. In the movie "Attention Aliens", Helen gets a new ambulance, but keeps the old one for safety.

Bella lasagna

The single owner of the café speaks with an Italian accent and is pretty chaotic. She loves her cat Rosa more than anything. She bakes cakes and pizzas and also takes care of Norman, who lives across from her. Some missions are in the bar, or you meet there at the end of the episode. In the 6th and 7th seasons she is not there, although the café can still be seen across from the supermarket. Season 10 explains that Bella has since moved to Newtown.

Charlie and Gwendolyn Jones

In seasons 6 and 7, instead of Bella's Café, they meet in Charlie and Gwendolyn's Cod Café, which is originally called Bronwyn. They are the parents of twins James and Sarah. Charlie is Sam's brother and a fisherman with his own boat, which is often in distress. His wife runs the typical British fish-and-chip bar in the harbor and is depicted as alternative and esoteric . She has a cat named Tiger, originally called Lion, who replaced Bella's Rosa.

Gareth Griffiths

Gwendolyn's father shows up on the railroad in Season 8 because he's the train driver. He lives in the train station.

Ms. Chen and Lily Chen

In season 8, the single parent elementary school teacher Ms. Chen appears with her three-year-old daughter Lily. She goes on trips into the mountains with her students, who then need a rescue mission. Her first name has not yet been mentioned.

Moose Roberts

Canadian-born climber Moose will be running an adventure center from season 8. He goes on hikes and mountain tours with the children. He is in sporting competition with Tom, which repeatedly leads to accidents.

Joe, Lizzie and Hannah Sparkes

The Sparkes family is also new in season 9. The father is a technician, the mother is a veterinarian and the daughter is an eleven-year-old student who is dependent on a wheelchair.

synchronization

Fireman Sam has been sold in over 40 countries and dubbed in around 20 languages. Sam almost always kept his name, only in Arabic and Hebrew he is called Sami. The title song, which was composed by Ben Heneghan and Ian Lawson, was each translated; it was omitted in Arabic. There you can only hear the melody.

The German synchronization of seasons 6-7 was created by Studio Hamburg Synchron GmbH.

Sascha Draeger directed the dialogue, while the translations and German dialogue books were by Stefan Eckel and Ulrich Georg.

Controversy

In July 2016 it was discovered that in the seventh episode of the ninth season a page of the Koran (Surat Al-Mulk (67), verses 13-26) could be seen after Elvis slipped over it. Production company Mattel apologized. ("Someone from production company thought they were just putting in random text. We have no reason to believe it was done maliciously.") The BBC received more than 1000 complaints and sent them to Channel 5, since BBC Fireman Sam had not been since 2008 shows.
