Dave McNary wrote on February 8, 2007 in the online edition of Variety magazine that Dennis Lee , who won an Oscar for his short film Jesus Henry Christ , which he shot while studying at university, had processed his own experiences in the film. The film addresses the "complexity of love and devotion in a family confronted with an unexpected tragedy" . ( "Semiautobiographical story centers on the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced by an unexpected tragedy." )

Tatiana Siegel described the then planned film in The Hollywood Reporter on February 9, 2007 as an "ensemble drama" .

Carolin Ströbele wrote on February 14, 2008 in the online edition of the newspaper Die Zeit that the film was “a bland strip” . It was announced “as a great family epic” , but it turned out to be “a collection of meaningless encounters” . It does not hold "the slightest family abyss" ; the “shallows announced in the film” are “at best puddles” . “Not even actors like Emily Watson and Willem Dafoe” manage to “give their woodcut-like characters even a touch of liveliness” . Julia Roberts plays "as always herself" - "pretty bloodless, like the whole film" .
