history

Logo of SENATOR Entertainment AG

Until July 8, 2015, the company was called SENATOR Entertainment AG, which had been producing and distributing German and international films through its operating daughters Senator Film Produktion and Senator Film Verleih since the 1970s . The Senator group operated further activities in the areas of television and music . In the spring of 2004 the company had to file for temporary bankruptcy. The debts at that time amounted to 168 million euros. The company got into trouble because of major disagreements within the banking consortium. So the continuation of the company could no longer be financed. Under a new management, however, a reorganization succeeded, so that on April 1, 2006 the bankruptcy was released and an entrepreneurial growth course was initiated.

As the company announced in the second half of 2008, one focus of Senator Entertainment AG's strategy in the future will be the in-house and co-production of German films.

In June 2007 Senator Entertainment entered the television business by taking over 51% of Pro GmbH , which was founded by Alfred Biolek and Friedrich Küppersbusch .

Senator Entertainment works closely with the independent French distribution and production company Wild Bunch. To this end, on December 18, 2007, a joint venture was created between the two companies through the sale of 50% of the Senator subsidiary Central Film Verleih . Among other things, the cooperation includes the evaluation of the productions of Wild Bunch on the German market via Central Film Verleih.

From 2000 to 2008 Senator Entertainment held a 50.1% stake in Berlin X Films and 25% in Berlin X-Verleihe .

With the French surprise hit Pretty Best Friends from 2011, Senator achieved its highest earnings to date, the film grossed more than 85 million US dollars in Germany. As a result, the production of further films was increasingly financed.

Senator couldn't repeat the success of Pretty Best Friends in the numbers for 2011 and 2012. The company invested anyway, but the 2013 revenue collapsed by half compared to the previous year. The result was a massive loss of the capital almost completely ate up. The company's financial situation was seen as the reason why Senator did not want to release Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, despite its great success in the United States and Great Britain. The distributor was no longer able to finance the six-figure marketing costs for a national theatrical release, according to their own statements. Under the Skin was finally only released on Blu-ray and DVD in Germany in October 2014.

On July 25, 2014 it was announced that Senator wants to merge with the French independent film distributor Wild Bunch SA.

On July 8, 2015, the company announced that it had renamed itself Wild Bunch AG.

Key figures
