Manta - The Film is a German action comedy from 1991 produced by Royal Film and directed by Peter Timm. It came into German cinemas four weeks before Manta, Manta , which also has the Opel Manta as its theme. It was released in theaters on September 19, 1991. The film received the FBW rating “valuable” and made it to number 1 on the German cinema charts and stayed there for several weeks. More than a million viewers were counted, making the Senator production the most successful cinema film produced in Germany in 1991. It was only in 1992 that Manta, Manta could catch up with these visitor numbers. On the occasion of its two-year existence, the pay-TV broadcaster Premiere broadcast the comedy unencrypted during prime time . In addition, there were more than 40 broadcasts on television afterwards.

action

Manfred Grabowski, a 17-year-old apprentice, is currently getting his driver's license with the manta driving instructor Theo. In order to impress his fellow (driving) student Tina and his friend Sven, who are both in the Golf Club, he wants to buy a Golf GTI as soon as possible . That's why he even delivers brochures. On one of these errands, his friend Sven guides him to the squash center. With his gentlemanly behavior, he impresses Tina, who was previously arrogant, so much that she takes him as a friend. One day before his 18th birthday, he wins a pimped up Opel Manta from a puzzle solution given by his mother. Although he is ashamed of the Manta, he has no choice but to pick up Tina with it, since his father has invested his savings for two years. On the way to and from the golf club establishment, the two of them are so mocked about the car that Tina turns to Phil and accompanies him home.

When Manfred believes his Tina is lost to Phil, who wants to advertise her as a nude photo model, he furiously scratches Phil's golf hood and is slapped by Tina. He races into the night, stops at the old factory site and floods his car with gasoline. Just before the flames of the petrol fuse reach the car, it is saved from the fire by a mysterious three-axle black manta pushing it gently. At the wheel of the black Manta sat the auto mechanic Sascha, whom he had visited before placing a sales advertisement in order to get a Golf GTI in exchange for the Manta. However, the attempt to place an advertisement ends with the admission to the Mantaclub, as the typist for the classified ad acceptance is also the secretary and immediately signs the admission form for him to sign. Although he only wants to get rid of his car, he is ceremoniously accepted after passing the theoretical and practical test. Due to Phil's intervention, the celebration no longer takes place.

His attack on the manta rays escalated into a scuffle between the clubs. Driving instructor Theo calms the heated minds by proposing a "Golf versus Manta" race to settle the dispute - not without ulterior motives, as he has by far the most powerful vehicle. But Sascha gives Manfred the starting place with the ominous 300 hp Manta. The race begins and seems lost when Phil drives Manfred away and the Manta crashes into an excavator shovel. Tina tells Phil to stop to check on Manfred. But when he is against it, there is an argument, Phil's golf overturns and goes up in flames. Manfred then stops with the torn open Manta on three wheels at the scene of the accident and rescues Tina from the burning wreck. So he doesn't win the race, but their affection and the recognition of the members of both clubs.

production

The three-axle Manta shown in the film was built by the Swiss stunt coordinator François Doge. There were three copies, one of which was destroyed while filming. The Bavaria-Filmtour bought a copy and exhibited it in Grünwald, where the car stood outdoors for years and eventually rotted away. Its whereabouts are unknown, as is that of the third car, which was divided lengthways and was still drivable.
