Five Guys is a US-based fast-food chain , which in 1986 in Arlington in the US state of Virginia was founded. The headquarters are in Lorton , Virginia. Forbes named it the fastest growing American restaurant chain in 2012.

In order to differentiate oneself from competitors in the public perception, the company's marketing concept includes emphasizing the fresh, handmade preparation of the dishes. It is advertised that freezers and microwaves are not used. Instead of using frozen food , for example, the potatoes for the French fries are cut on site. An open kitchen is therefore part of the branch design. Every customer can personalize his hamburger with different ingredients such as tomatoes or sauces . Because of these characteristics, Five Guys is included in the better burger segment.

Company history

The first "Five Guys" restaurant was opened in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell in Arlington, Virginia in the Westmont Shopping Center. The name arose from the fact that the founding couple had four sons at the time, who together with the father make up the original "Five Guys". A fifth son was added later, and all of them have now taken on a role in the company. By 2001, Five Guys had opened a total of six offices in northern Virginia and Washington, DC . Because of its great success, the company began to expand in other parts of Virginia and Maryland in 2002/2003 through franchising . Within 18 months, this area was fully assigned, so the company decided to open offices in the rest of the United States. In 2012, there were more than 1,000 offices in 47 states and six Canadian provinces .

Worldwide distribution

The first restaurant outside of North America opened in London in July 2013 . The first branch on the European mainland followed in Paris in August 2016 . In addition to the USA, Canada , Great Britain and France , the company is now also active in Ireland , Germany , Switzerland , the United Arab Emirates , Saudi Arabia , Kuwait , Belgium and the Netherlands . Around 1650 branches are operated worldwide (as of May 2020) and the company wants to expand further.

Germany

The first branch in Germany was opened on December 4, 2017 on the " Zeil " in Frankfurt am Main. This was followed by a branch in Essen from December 2017 and a branch at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, in the CentrO in Oberhausen and in the Riem Arcaden in Munich from autumn 2018 . In 2019 five more branches opened in Munich, Berlin ( Kurfürstendamm and Alexanderplatz ), Dortmund and Hanover. At the beginning of 2020, further branches opened in Wiesbaden and Stuttgart . In June a branch opened in the McArthurGlen outlet center in Neumünster and in July 2020 branches opened in the Sedelhöfe in Ulm and in Düsseldorf's old town .

Five Guys' offerings are relatively limited compared to other fast food chains and focus on hamburgers and French fries . The regular burger consists of a roll with two slices of roasted ground beef , optionally with cheese , bacon or both. In the “Little” version there is only one disc. Several ingredients such as lettuce , tomato slices , ketchup , mayonnaise , onions , pepper slices , mustard , barbecue sauce and mushrooms can be added at no extra charge .

In addition, four different types of hot dogs and sandwiches are offered. During the waiting time while the food ordered is being prepared, guests can eat peanuts for free , which are offered in large boxes.

Five Guys also became known because Barack Obama likes to eat out at the chain. A public visit in 2009 was followed by a million people.

Time magazine put Five Guys French fries on its list of the ten most unhealthy fast food dishes due to its calorie count in 2017 .
