description

Kosovars on Mont Blanc

The flag shows six white stars in a slight arc over the golden outline of Kosovo on a blue background. The blue background stands for “the hope of the people of Kosovo to be integrated into the existing Euro-Atlantic structures”. The stars stand for the ethnic groups of Albanians , Bosniaks , Roma , Serbs , Turks and the remaining minorities. Other sources assign the sixth star to the Gorans , whereby the groups of Ashkali and Kosovar Egyptians are combined with the Roma. The models are the flags of the European Union and Bosnia-Herzegovina .

Official sources specified a brownish shade for the flag's gold, while most flags in common use use a strong yellow. It was later revealed that the colors on the government website were incorrectly converted from the CMYK color model to RGB . The official specifications are:

system blue gold White
RGB 24-56-132 219-187-91 255-255-255
Hexadecimal color definition # 183884 # DBBB5B #FFFFFF

Kosovo is formally under UN administration (UNMIK), which is why the United Nations flag has officially been used since then . Since Kosovo only officially gave itself its own flag on the day of its declaration of independence, the Albanian flag was and is used by the Kosovar Albanians as a universal symbol of their ethnic group. The Kosovar Serbs often use the flag of Serbia .

history

Albanians in Yugoslavia

In the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , the Albanian people officially used a flag similar to that of what was then Albania, except that the star was shifted to the left and larger. When Slobodan Milošević came to power , the official minority flags disappeared and the Albanians used the flag of Albania.

Look for a new flag

The then head of Lidhja Demokratie e Kosovës Ibrahim Rugova presented a flag of Kosovo at a press conference on October 29, 2000, which showed the Albanian eagle on a red disk in a gold circle on a blue background. Above the eagle stood a hexagonal gold star. The eagle wore a breastplate divided into four parts (gold-red-black-gold with black wheels in the golden fields) and a banner with " DARDANIA ", a name used by Albanians for Kosovo. But the flag could not prevail. UÇK veterans even burned them. Rugova continued to use it on official occasions and it was shown at his 2006 funeral.

Joseph J. DioGuardi , founder of the Albanian American Civic League and former member of the United States House of Representatives , created a combination of the flags of Albania and the United States . In July 2006, DioGuardi declared that the flag represents the historical connections between Kosovo and the Albanians from Montenegro , Macedonia , the Preshevë Valley , Çameria (in Epirus, Greece ) and the Arbëresh in Italy (DioGuardi's family descended from Arbëresh). The white stripes are supposed to symbolize the important role of the USA for the Albanians. After the First World War, US President Woodrow Wilson campaigned for the recognition of Albania, and in 1999 NATO, led by the US, intervened in the Kosovo war against Serbia. Indeed, on February 17, 2008, in anticipation of the declaration of independence, Albanians decorated their homes with flags of Albania and the United States.

Between June 13th and 27th, 2007, a competition for new state symbols for Kosovo was held. 993 flags were submitted, around 700 met the criteria, such as avoiding the Albanian and Serbian eagles (which eliminated Rugova's and DioGuardi's proposals) and the sole use of red-black or blue-white-red and the requirement of one rectangular shape with an aspect ratio of 2: 3. From these proposals, three drafts were selected by a commission and presented on February 6, 2008. They should be put to the Kosovo Parliament for a vote. One of the candidates, mentor from Kosovar Albanians Shala and Besnik Nuli, showed the country outline of Kosovo in white in the center of four small and one large yellow, five-pointed star. The model here was the flag of the European Union , which is intended to symbolize Kosovo's hope that it will soon belong to the European Union. The largest star symbolizes the majority of the Albanians. The second suggestion was a tricolor with vertical black, white and red stripes. The third design was the same tricolor with a spiral in the center of the white stripe, a Dardanic symbol for the sun.

The new flag is based on the first of the three design proposals. The final draft of the flag was made by Muhamer Ibrahimi . So that enough flags were available for the celebrations for the proclamation of independence without the appearance of the new flag being known beforehand, the flags were produced in Turkey and brought to Kosovo by a Turkish Airlines machine .
