The Maastricht Aachen Airport ( IATA : MST ; ICAO : EHBK ; also Vliegveld Zuid-Limburg / Beek ) is an international commercial airport in the town of Beek about 10 kilometers northeast of Maastricht and 30 kilometers northwest of Aachen . The airport can be reached by car and bus via Rijksweg 2 . It is particularly important for air freight traffic , but is also used by low-cost and charter airlines.

Next to the airport also is Upper Area Control Center Maastricht of Euro Control , which ft upper airspace from 24,500 (7,500 m) north-west Germany , the Benelux -countries and northern France monitored.

Airlines and Destinations

Maastricht Aachen Airport is used by low-cost and charter airlines for passenger traffic. Corendon Dutch Airlines and Transavia mainly serve holiday destinations in the Mediterranean region. Freight traffic is of greater importance; Royal Jordanian and Cargolux , among others, operate from Maastricht Aachen Airport worldwide.

In July 2012, Ryanair announced that it would open a base in Maastricht from December 2012 and initially station a plane there. In summer 2013, Ryanair flew to 15 destinations from Maastricht: London-Stansted , Dublin , Treviso , Bari , Bergamo , Pisa , Trapani , Girona , Alicante , Málaga , Palma , Tenerife , Faro , Porto and Brive-la-Gaillarde . In November 2013 it was announced that Ryanair would close the base again and cancel several routes.

expansion

Plans to expand the airfield, which was established in 1944 as an Allied air force base, repeatedly met with fierce opposition, as the approach path should lead over the center of several villages and towns in the Netherlands and neighboring Belgium . Since air freight traffic mainly takes place at night, there is a fear of excessive noise pollution.
