The settlement is one of the most recent city expansion projects in Salzburg and was built from 1983 to 1984 (planning) and from 1987 to 1990 (construction period) on what was then the outermost periphery of the city.

Initiated by the then city councilor Johannes Voggenhuber (citizens' list) as a model building project of the so-called architectural reform , the project Forellenwegiedlung was intended to reform the structure of social housing with the housing developer-architect-politician community with the help of foreign architects. In the appraisal process carried out in 1984, the design advisory board decided in favor of the rigid concept of the Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers , which was declared the “master plan” for the developments planned by seven teams of architects, mainly the statements of the Italian architect Aldo Rossi and the Austrian Adolf Krischanitz .

The internationally published trout path settlement enriched the Austrian debate about adequate housing on the periphery and gave the Salzburg housing discussion a new and significant impetus. The project also marks the beginning of the architectural reform, initiated by City Councilor Johannes Voggenhuber , towards more contemporary and high-quality building. The squares and alleys, arranged according to graphical criteria, were intended to represent a contemporary interpretation of Salzburg's old town , but could only contribute to a limited extent to the upgrading of the residential area and the public space. The applied urbanity was mixed with a stronger garden city character in the execution .

In order to supply the residents of the settlement with public transport, trolleybus line  4 was extended from the last terminus at Lieferinger Spitz to the trout trail settlement at the same time as the construction .

The trout trail settlement today

Today, the settlement presents itself as a functioning community of tenants and owners. The resident service and numerous associations and initiatives contribute to the high identity value. Due to its success, the resident service of the Forellenweg settlement is now responsible for the entire Liefering district and, with its more than 20 years of experience, also supports similar projects in the neighboring town of Freilassing.
