Interstate 35 runs through the northwest of the metropolitan area and forms the fastest connection from Saint Paul to Duluth near the border with Canada . The US Highway 61 leads as the main road through the city center. The western end point of US Highway 8 is on the northern outskirts of the city . South of downtown, US 61 is intersected by Minnesota State Route 97 . All other roads within Forest Lake are minor driveways or inner-city connecting roads.
With the Forest Lake Airport to the city center is located south of a small airfield in the city of Lake Forest. The nearest major airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (54.9 km southwest).

The Forest Lake Township was established on March 11, 1874th The town of Forest Lake was given the status of a self-governing municipality on July 11, 1893. In 2001 the Forest Lake Township was dissolved and the entire area of the city of Forest Lake was added.
