William Cullen

William Cullen (born March 4, 1826 in County Donegal , Ireland , †  January 17, 1914 in Ottawa , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1832, William Cullen and his parents came to Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania from their Irish homeland , where he later attended public schools and the Allegheny Academy . In 1846 he moved to Adams Township in LaSalle County , Illinois; there he worked in agriculture. In 1864 and 1864 he was sheriff in that district. Since 1865 Cullen lived in Ottawa, the administrative seat of LaSalle County. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1871 and 1887 he served as the political editor of the Ottawa Republican newspaper .

In the congressional election of 1880 , Cullen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Seventh Constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Philip C. Hayes on March 4, 1881 . After re-election in the eighth district of his state, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1885 . In 1884 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, William Cullen retired. He died on January 17, 1914 in Ottawa, where he was also buried.
