François Chassagnite (* 1955 in Ussel (Corrèze) ; † April 7, 2011 ) was a French jazz musician ( trumpet , vocals ).

Live and act

Chassagnite learned the trumpet as a teenager in La Flèche and played in amateur bands from 1973 during his veterinary studies before he finally decided on a career as a musician. From 1979 he appeared in Parisian clubs, initially as a cornetist with the Old Fashioned Orchestra in the Caveau de la Montagne . In 1981 he became a member of the Euro-Jazz Big Band ; in the 1980s he also played in the bands of Jean-Loup Longnon , Antoine Hervé , Andy Emler and Denis Badault . With Alain Jean-Marie , Alby Cullaz and Oliver Johnson he formed a joint quartet. In 1986 Chassagnite was a member of the first edition of the Orchester National de Jazz under the direction of François Jeanneau ( 86 , Label Bleu ), with whom he toured European and African countries.

In 1987/88 he belonged to the big bands of Gil Evans / Laurent Cugny (Big Band Lumière) and Gérard Badini . In 1989 he played his debut album Samya Cynthia ; The album Epistrophy, dedicated to Thelonious Monk , followed in 1993 . With his trio , Chassagnite last released the album Jubilation in 2006 , a homage to Chet Baker (whom he liked very much). Around 2010 he had a joint quintet with the alto saxophonist Seb Chaumont. In the course of his career, he also worked with Stéphane Bertrand , Emanuele Cisi , Gérard Gustin ( Onztet ), Dominique Lemerle and Frédéric Viale . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 31 recordings between 1983 and 2010.

Chassagnite taught at the Center d'informations musicales in Paris and from 1997 at the Nice Conservatory. After playing at his club in Nice the night before, he died of a heart attack on April 7, 2011.
