Live and act

Ruddle's parents were of British descent. Born in New Jersey , Francis Ruddle grew up in Connecticut . After military service in the United States Air Force , he began studying at Wayne State University in Detroit , Michigan , during which he was also employed by Wolf William Zülzer in the laboratory of the Children's Research Center there . Instead of the originally planned study of medicine, Ruddle switched to studying biology. In 1960 he earned a Ph.D. from Morgan Harris at the University of California, Berkeley. with a thesis on chromosomes in mammalian - cell lines . As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with John Paul and Guido Pontecorvo in Glasgow .

In 1961 Ruddle received a professorship (initially as assistant professor ) in the group of Ross Granville Harrison at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut . Most recently he was Sterling Professor - the highest academic position at Yale. Ruddle's work has been funded for many years by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) organization that promotes basic biomedical research . Ruddle laid out extensive gene maps of the human genome - and that of the mouse , which in large areas proved to be homologous to that of humans. Ruddle did a great job setting up a cell bank for various cell lines and coordinating gene mapping workshops ( sponsored by the March of Dimes ). In addition, he taught medical genetics courses at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor , Maine .

He was married to Nancy Hartman Ruddle , a professor (of epidemiology and microbiology ) at Yale University. After their retirement both continued to lead working groups at the university.

Francis H. Ruddle died on March 10, 2013 at the age of 83 from complications from a heart condition.
