Franz Beckmann (philologist)

Franz Beckmann (born February 14, 1895 in Fürstenau ; † July 16, 1966 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German classical philologist .

Franz Beckmann attended the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück and, after serving in the First World War, studied classical philology, ancient history , archeology and linguistics in Berlin (with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff ) and Münster . After the state examination (January 21, 1923) and doctorate (February 2, 1923) he worked as an assistant at the Prussian State Library in Berlin. In 1926 he completed his habilitation at the Berlin University for Classical Philology and worked for a year as a managing assistant at the Institute for Classical Studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin .

From 1928 onwards Beckmann represented Peter Sonnenburg's chair for classical philology in Münster , and he succeeded him in 1931. He stayed in Münster until his retirement (1963); During the Second World War he was used from 1943 as a reserve officer for cultural troop support in the Balkans. From 1949 to 1951 he was rector of the university.

Beckmann was particularly concerned with the Roman literary and cultural history. In 1950 he founded the Orbis antiquus series .

Franz Beckmann was with Dr. Clara born Aldick married. The couple had four children.
