Franz Bernhard Altenburger (* in Schwaz in Tyrol ; † December 3, 1736 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Baroque painter who mainly worked in Breisgau . Hermann Brommer in particular researched what is known about him .

Saints Hilarius and Remigius in St. Hilarius, Ebnet

Altenburger came from a family of goldsmiths from Schwaz; Further details are not known due to the destruction of the Schwaz archives by fire. In 1728 he can be traced for the first time in Freiburg. He was friends here with the artists Andreas Hochsing († 1736 in Horb am Neckar ) and Johann Pfunner , who had also immigrated from Schwaz , "just as the 'Tyroller' were very close together". He died unmarried and was buried in the church of the Dominican monastery in Freiburg .

His first work in Freiburg was the high altar painting of the parish church St. Hilarius in Freiburg-Ebnet , signed “FB. Altenburger jnv. et pinxit 1730 ". It shows St. Hilarius of Aquileia and the second patron saint of the church, St. Remigius , as they divert the graces of God onto the level. Below, angel children unroll a view of the town with the church and castle of the Barons von Sickingen . "It is not surprising that after this skillful picture, Altenburger soon received further orders in Breisgau."

Brommer has attributed several paintings to Altenburger in St. Ursula in Freiburg: the ceiling paintings; the former side altar paintings of St. Ursula of Cologne with palm, flag and arrow in their hands and of St. Joseph with the Christ Child on his right arm now hanging on the south wall ; and panels of Mary and the angel Gabriel from an Annunciation of the Lord .

Altenburger signed the side altar leaves of the Adelhauser monastery church in Freiburg, namely a martyrdom of St. Catherine ("FB Altenburger jnv.") And a "Miracle of Soriano " ("FBA jnv. 1731") in which the Madonna with St. Mary Magdalene and presented a picture of St. Dominic to St. Catherine to a Dominican . The associated upper images, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Peter von Verona , are also believed to have come from Altenburger.

From 1734 to 1736 the 14 ceiling paintings and two high altar paintings of St. Margareta in Waldkirch were created . The ceiling paintings show the legend of St. Margaret "in a plastic, haunting way" . The lower high altar glorifies the saint. Dressed in splendid gold-blue, she fends off the vice by holding out the cross to them. An angel reaches into her blue cloak and spreads it protectively over the earth. The row above reminds of saints associated with Waldkirch, namely Martin , Walburga , Elisabeth of Thuringia and Johannes Nepomuk . At the very top Mary is enthroned with a wreath of stars around her head. The picture in the extract shows the Holy Trinity .

The works also include monochrome scenes from the story of Jesus' passion on the parapet of the organ gallery of St. Michael in Niederrotweil , a district of Vogtsburg in the Kaiserstuhl ; Ecce homo and Mater dolorosa pictures ibid; a coronation of Mary in the parish church of the Assumption in Wittnau ; and the ceiling paintings in the parish church of St. Laurentius in Kenzingen .
