History and population
The first syllable of the place name Fraunschlag is derived from the Middle High German word vrôn (“belonging to the Lord”), while -schlag refers to the clearing activity in this area. The place name was mentioned for the first time in the middle of the 13th century, but the place should have been created around 1200. In Fraunschlag, in 1869, 97 people lived in 13 houses. The number of inhabitants remained almost unchanged until 1910, with 94 inhabitants in 13 houses at that time. The population was exclusively Catholic. By 1923 the population sank to 84 people, with the number of buildings remaining the same. In 1951 only 71 people lived in Fraunschlag, whereby for the first time a distinction was made between the village of Fraunschlag with 11 buildings and 56 inhabitants and scattered areas with two buildings and 15 inhabitants. In 1971, too, little had changed in the size of the village. At that time it comprised 78 residents and 14 houses. The village still consisted of 11 houses with 59 inhabitants and the scattered areas consisted of three buildings with 19 residents. In 1981, Fraunschlag had 74 residents in 15 buildings, the village had 55 residents in 12 buildings and the scattered settlement 19 residents in three buildings. The population has recently increased. In 2001 62 people lived in 18 houses in Fraunhofer, compared to 68 in 2011.
