geography

Starz is located in the southwest of the municipality of Altenfelden and in the southwest of the cadastral municipality of the same name. The Kleine Mühl forms the border to the community of Niederkappel with the village of Haar and the community of Lembach im Mühlkreis with the village of Graben. The village of Hörhag is northeast of Starz and Unteredt to the southwest . Most of Starz's buildings are located on the Kleine Mühl and are part of the Obermühl paper mill . In addition, the buildings on the road north-west of the Unteredt farm north-west of the Unteredt farm 8 with the Starzer Teil farm belong to Starz. A total of 17 buildings were counted for Starz in 2001, ten of which had a main residence and 18 consisted of apartments or 14 households. There were also four agricultural and forestry facilities and one job.

history

The place name Starz is derived from the Middle High German word starcz (end of the field). The name first appears in a document in 1397. In 1869, 43 people lived in seven houses in Starz. By 1910, the population increased sharply, with 93 residents in ten houses in that year.

Mills

Höllmühle, today the B-grinding shop of the Obermühl paper factory

Three mills have been in operation in Starz since the early 17th century at the latest, and today they are part of the Obermühl paper mill. The Mühleck-Mühle (Starz No. 2), also Unteredt-Mühle, was formerly part of the village of Unteredt. It belonged to the dominion of Pürnstein-Kirchberg and was subject to payment for the parish of Kirchberg. In addition, the owners of the mill had to provide the Kirchberg pastor with a wooden robot. The mill was sold to the Obermühl paper mill in 1941.

The Fenksäge not far to the south (Starz No. 2), formerly part of the Tannberg judicial district, was bought by the Obermühl paper mill in 1929 and operated as a frame saw for cutting logs. The saw was later shut down. The construction of a new small hydropower plant at the site of the old shaft turbine from the 1920s is currently being planned.

The Höllmühle in the south of Starz was, according to an old land register, a mill with three gears and a saw. It was bought by the Obermühl paper mill in 1887. The flour mill at that time with a single-toothed board saw was converted by the factory owners into a wood grinding shop (= B grinding shop). After a fire in 1909, the grinding shop received modern machines and the simple saw frame was replaced by a full frame. However, the saw gate disappeared in 1927 when a cable car was built. The Höllmühle, also known as the Sonnberger grinding shop, now supplies electricity for the paper mill , and the excess electricity is fed into the public grid.
