Freddy Borg (born November 27, 1983 in Trelleborg ) is a Swedish football player who is used as a left-footed offensive player , especially as a striker . After starting his career in his home country, Borg moved to Germany in early 2012, where he played for various clubs in the 2nd Bundesliga and 3rd League , and then was under contract in Azerbaijan, Sweden and Norway.

Career

Starts in Trelleborg, Malmö and Höllvikens

Borg started playing soccer at the age of six. His father Mats Lindgren once played for IFK Malmö in the 2nd division and was later chairman of IFK Trelleborg . Freddy Borg also played for them at the age of 17. In January 2002, at the age of 18, Borg was initially committed to Malmö FF for one year after training with the team in autumn 2001.

With Höllvikens GIF , Borg played in 2003 and 2004 in Division 2 , which at that time was the third division. Despite his placement in the lower half of the table and numerous injuries with a total of twelve goals scored in the 2004 season, he attracted the interest of higher-class clubs.

Borg near Östers Växjö

In December 2004, Borg decided to move to Östers IF from Växjö , which in 2004 had missed the direct return from the second-rate Superettan to the Allsvenskan . In the 2005 season , Borg did not succeed in establishing himself as a regular player, but with four goals in 16 appearances he contributed to the fact that Östers finished second at the end of the season and thus rose again to the Allsvenskan. In this, however, the team could not assert itself in 2006 and immediately rose again as the table penultimate. Borg had only scored one goal within 18 appearances.

In the second division season 2007 Borg managed to establish himself in the newly formed team as a regular player. Unlike in previous years, however, Östers did not play for immediate promotion during this season, but on the contrary even faced the risk of relegation. The fact that Borg had only been able to score one goal in his 24 missions also contributed to this. At the end of the season, the team finally occupied the penultimate place in the table and consequently rose to Division 1 as Sweden's third-highest division.

In Division 1, Borg then came to a total of 27 missions in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, in which he scored seven goals. But because the club only took second place in its league season in 2008 and had lost the relegation games it achieved against Jönköpings Södra IF , it was not until 2009 when they were first in the table. In the 2010 season of the Superettan Borg then completed 27 missions for the newly promoted, in which he was able to achieve a total of seven goals. Despite a coach change in the meantime, the team only finished third from last and was therefore obliged to play two relegation games against Qviding FIF , which in turn had taken second place in the southern division of Division 1. Even with two goals by Borg, Östers was able to decide both games for himself and thus achieved relegation.

In the 2011 season , Borg announced that this season would be his last for Östers as he was looking to get involved abroad. Under the newly appointed coach Roar Hansen , he then took fourth place with the team in the final table, only three points away from third place entitled to promotion relegation. Borg had played his personally most successful season for Östers with eight goals in 25 appearances and thus also attracted the interest of several top division clubs.

Stations in Germany

At the beginning of 2012, Borg traveled to Germany to complete a trial training session with the third division club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, which was trained by Mario Basler . Borg left a positive impression, so that a commitment from the Swede would have been conceivable, but a few days later Borg also played for the second division club Hansa Rostock . In the case of the Ostseestädtern trained by Wolfgang Wolf , Borg was initially able to recommend an extension of this trial training and was soon tied to the club: Borg signed a contract until June 2012, which would automatically change if the relegation-threatened Rostockers were relegated should extend another year.

On February 5, 2012, Borg made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1: 2 defeat against VfL Bochum . In this game as well as in the 4-2 victory over MSV Duisburg on the following match day, Borg was able to enter himself into the list of goalscorers, so that he was soon seen as a "bearer of hope" at the relegation threatened FC Hansa. As early as mid-March, however, due to a thigh injury, he was no longer able to build on these achievements and was mostly only used as a substitute. Against this background, coach Wolf publicly accused the striker of not complying with tactical guidelines and also showing weaknesses in header play and receiving the ball. At the end of the season, Borg had been able to score five goals within 14 appearances, but Rostock's relegation to the third division was already certain from the penultimate match day. Borg then did not receive an offer to extend the contract in Rostock and Borg's possible engagement with MSV Duisburg, which remained in the second division, failed due to different financial ideas.

At the beginning of June 2012, Borg finally signed a two-year contract with Alemannia from Aachen , which was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division at the same time as Hansa. Borg played 14 games for Aachen up to the winter break of the 2012/13 season , but was only used as a substitute in ten of these games and had only scored one goal. Meanwhile, the club had to file for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties , which is why most of the team had to accept a salary waiver of up to 70 percent, while four other players left the club during the winter break. One of these players was Borg, who in late January 2013 received a contract with league competitor SV Darmstadt 98 that was limited to the end of the season . In the second half of the season, he came to Hesse on another 14 missions, in which, however, he remained without a goal. In the final table, he finished 18th with the team. The lilies were only able to avoid the associated sporting descent through the revocation of the Offenbacher Kickers' license .

Short stays in Azerbaijan, Sweden and Norway

Despite offers from Sweden, Borg switched to AZAL PFK Baku in the summer of 2013 . For the club from the Azerbaijani capital he played in the Premyer Liqası , but came only to irregular appearances as a substitute. Ultimately, he therefore prematurely terminated his one-year contract at the turn of the year.

In March 2014 he signed a contract with Trelleborgs FF in his hometown, which was valid until the summer . For the second division he scored two goals in eight games and his contract was not extended. Therefore, he moved to the Norwegian club Nybergsund IL-Trysil in mid-August for free in the third-class Oddsenligaen , where he received a contract valid until the end of the season. For the club he scored six goals in eleven games, when they were fifth in the table, the team missed promotion to the second division.
