Beginnings

Guarín began his career in 2002 with the Colombian club Envigado FC . In 2005 he moved on loan to the Argentine top club Boca Juniors , where he was initially used mainly in the youth team. During this time, Guarín was a constant player in the various youth selections of the Colombian national football team .

AS Saint-Etienne

After the loan period in 2006, the Boca Juniors tried to tie Guarín for a longer period. However, this decided to move to the French club AS Saint-Étienne , again on loan.

Already on his debut against the Spanish club Espanyol Barcelona (friendly match) he scored two goals and he continued to develop. He made his league debut on October 14, 2006 against Olympique Lyon , and by the end of the 2006/07 season he was already part of the team. His first league goal was on March 17, 2007 in a 3-1 win over Troyes AC . In the following season, Guarín was given a permanent contract.

FC Porto

Guarín for Porto (2011)

As a result of his consistently good performance, Guarín was able to sign a four-year contract with the Portuguese top club FC Porto on July 10, 2008 , which would also make him play at European level. As part of the contract, Portuguese Paulo Machado moved to AS Saint-Étienne on loan .

Guarín also managed to demonstrate his qualities at FC Porto . His most important goal for the Portuguese he scored on May 16, 2010 in the cup final against GD Chaves , which ended 2-1 for FC Porto. However, he celebrated his greatest success wearing the Porto jersey by winning the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League . Guarín himself contributed five goals to this title and, with the exception of the final, scored at least once in every knockout round .

Inter Milan

On January 31, 2012, Inter Milan announced the signing of Guarín on loan. After the loan expired, there was a purchase option with a contract until June 30, 2016. He made his debut on April 1, 2012 in a 5-4 home win over CFC Genoa , when he came on for Dejan Stanković in the 59th minute .

The purchase option was drawn in May 2012. Inter Milan paid FC Porto a transfer fee of 11 million euros. On August 30, 2012, Guarín scored his first competitive goal for Inter against FC Vaslui after a solo from the midfield line.

In May 2014, the Colombian signed a new contract until June 30, 2017.

Shanghai Shenhua and CR Vasco da Gama

In January 2016 he left the Italians and went to Shanghai Shenhua in China for 13 million euros , where he quickly became a regular player. In the Chinese Super League he scored 23 goals in 83 appearances in his three years. He gave his first on March 5, 2016 against Yanbian Funde (1: 1). At the end of September 2019, Guarín moved back to South America to CR Vasco da Gama , where he played all games for the rest of the season from October 17, 2019 , except for one game due to a yellow card suspension.

In the national team
