Friedhelm (Friduhelm) Johannes Arnold Ranke , von Ranke since 1865 (born September 17, 1847 in Berlin , † June 22, 1917 in Jena ) was a Prussian major general .

He is the third son of the historian Leopold von Ranke and Klarissa Graves, who was elevated to hereditary nobility in 1865 .

Military career

Ranke joined the Kaiser Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 of the Prussian Army as a fusilier after visiting the University of Berlin on August 4, 1866 . On February 9, 1867 appointed portepeefähnrich , followed on May 16, 1867 his promotion to secondary lieutenant . Ranke was at the beginning of the war against France until October 30, 1870 for service with the 1st mobile battalion of the 1st Guard Grenadier Landwehr Regiment and then until March 24, 1871 for service with the III. This was followed by a position as a company commander at the non-commissioned officer school in Weißenfels before Ranke graduated from the War Academy for three years from October 1, 1871 . Promoted to major with a patent dated September 2, 1889 , Ranke was transferred to the infantry regiment "von Courbière" (2nd Posensches) no . Initially he worked here as a battalion commander and on May 13, 1895, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel as a regular staff officer in the regimental staff. As a colonel , Ranke was in command of the Magdeburg Fusilier Regiment No. 36 from July 20, 1897 to May 17, 1901 . Ranke was then promoted to major general commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade in Liegnitz . Ranke was released from this post on May 16, 1902 and put up for disposal with the statutory pension . After his departure, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on June 3, 1902 . He died of tongue cancer on June 22, 1917 at the age of 69 .

In 1884 he married his grandniece Selma Ranke, the daughter of Heinrich Ranke . Both lived in Rudolstadt . The marriage had five children, including the historian Ermentrude Bäcker von Ranke .
