In the first group game, the Greeks faced the Netherlands. After a penalty goal from Kist in the 65th minute, the Greeks could not go further and lost the game. The second group game against Czechoslovakia was also lost. Despite the brief equalization to 1: 1 by Anastopoulos, the Greeks lost 3-1 to goals from Vizek and Nehoda. In the third group game, already eliminated, the southern Europeans could look forward to a draw against eventual European champions Germany.
