The favorites in Group 2 were clearly the English. After beating Chile (2-0), superstar Stan Matthews stayed in the stands during the game against the underdog USA (previously 3-1 against Spain) and should be spared for the Spain game. In one of the biggest World Cup sensations, England lost 1-0 to the Americans (37th, Gaetjens). Since the English did not score a goal against Spain with the best line-up, but had to accept one through Zarra (49th), Spain surprisingly became group winners. England finished second on points with the other two teams and did not qualify for the final round.
