The U-19 national soccer team of the GDR was a selection team of soccer players from the GDR . As a junior team, it was part of the German Football Association and represented it internationally at the U-19 level . It existed for a single appearance at a U-19 European Championship .

At the time the GDR existed, the European Junior Championships were still run as a U-18 competition. In the case of the 1986 European Championship finals, the tournament was not played during or immediately after the 1985/86 season, but rather the continental champion was determined during the 1986/87 season. Since the country's best 18-year-old footballers had already outgrown the junior area at club or community level at this point, the East German selection was now listed as U-19 in a large number of publications, including in the trade journal fuwo .

The team's coach when they won the title in Yugoslavia in the autumn of 1986 was ex-national team player Eberhard Vogel . The top division record player was assisted by Wilfried Gröbner . The main pillars of the winning squad included Matthias Sammer , Rico Steinmann , Axel Kruse (two finals in three games) and team captain Karsten Neitzel . At the end of 1986, the European junior champions received the award of Sportsman of the Year in the GDR in the team category in front of the women's swimming and volleyball national teams, who came in second and third in a reader survey at the end of 1986 . As U-20s of the GDR , the almost identical team won the bronze medal in Chile in 1987 .
