Fuwo Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Football Week Cup (short: Fuwo-Pokal ) was a competition of the German Football Association that took place in the 1971/72 season . The Cup was in the tradition of the 1964 Olympic Cup and was a predecessor of the 1974 and 1976 DFV Toto special round .

The Fuwo Cup was held once in 1972 and was donated by the specialist journal FuWo . The 5 kg heavy and sixty centimeter high cup was made by goldsmith Wolfgang Friedrich from Berlin-Eichwalde . The competition took place immediately after the last day of the 1971/72 season.

All 14 major league teams of the 1971/72 season took part in the FuWo-Pokal, including the two teams on the relegation positions. Two relays were formed for the competition, in which everyone had to compete against everyone in a simple round (without a second leg) for points. The respective season winners contested the final, the runner-up played the third place. The home right was drawn. The cup winner was surprisingly FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , which was always in relegation battle during the season. The top league teams from Magdeburg, Berlin and Dresden sometimes had to compete without their national players, as they had to be deployed for the international match against the Uruguayan national soccer team and to prepare for the Olympic Games.

The DFV did not repeat the cup in the following period. Only in the 1973/74 and 1975/76 seasons was the similar DFV Toto special round played, in which teams from the GDR league were also allowed.
