Génova is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Quindío in Colombia's coffee-growing region (eje cafetero) .

geography

Génova lies at an altitude of between 3000  m above sea level. NN and 3850  m above sea level. NN 52 km south of Armenia and has an average temperature between 18 and 22 ° C. Génova borders Pijao to the north, Roncesvalles in the Tolima department to the southeast and Caicedonia and Seville in the Valle del Cauca department to the southwest .

The municipality of Génova has 7351 inhabitants, of which 3790 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of ​​today's Génova was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Quimbayas , Pijaos and Quindos . However, during the colonial period the area was not inhabited and was only settled from Antioquia from the 19th century . Génova itself was founded in 1903 and received municipality status in 1937.

economy

The main industry in Génova is agriculture . Coffee , in particular , but also bananas , sugar cane , fruit , beans , corn and vegetables are grown. There is also livestock farming .
