Gabriel Burns was a mystery-thriller radio play series on the Decision Products label . Producer and director was Volker Sassenberg , the idea and concept came from author Raimon Weber and Volker Sassenberg. The first episode appeared in 2003. After Raimon Weber left the project after 16 episodes, Andreas Gloge was responsible for the radio play manuscripts.
Due to protracted legal disputes between Universal Music Group and Volker Sassensberg's production company Decision Products, no new radio plays were released between 2010 and 2013. After a change of distribution partner, new episodes have been released under Sony Music Entertainment since 2013 , but production was discontinued at the end of 2014 for unknown reasons. In an interview, Sassenberg announced that further episodes of Gabriel Burns would appear in 2018, but that did not happen.
content
The content of the radio play is the story of the taxi driver Steven Burns from Vancouver , Canada , who one day is tricked into taking on a mysterious case as a detective by a mysterious stranger who calls himself Bakerman. So far it can be seen that the search for immortality is the central motif of the series. There are also other unsolved puzzles, such as the identity of Mr. Bakerman or the disappearance of Steven's brother Daniel before the start of the series.
All previously published episodes from the series are related in terms of content and build on each other. Because of the gloomy atmosphere, the radio play is hardly suitable for children and the age rating from 12 is often referred to by fans as a running gag .
people
Steven Burns
Steven Burns is a 34-year-old Vancouver-based writer who makes a living as a taxi driver because of a lack of income and who writes novels that are published by Sonny Heseltine cookbook publisher. In the first episode he is suspected of murder by a trap and is forced to work for him by Bakerman, the mastermind behind the plot. Steven used previously uncontrollable telekinetic powers to make his brother Daniel disappear on his fourth birthday while performing a magic trick. Since then, the events of that time have not let him go. Clarifying them is one of the reasons why Steven starts working for Bakerman, who pretends to know something about it.
Bakerman
Bakerman, born in 1882, is a short, bald man who, as the head of an ominous organization, employs Joyce, Larry, and Steven. In the first episodes you learn that as a former Canadian government official, he has brought in too much money and influence. He nearly died trying to save the life of a Senussi girl. As a thank you, Ila al Khalf , the Elixir of Return, made it as good as immortal, but the effect of this mysterious essence wears off after a long time.
Joyce Kramer
Joyce Kramer, 29 years old, is the only one who has worked for Mr. Bakerman's secret organization from the start. She is half a Tlingit Indian. Bakerman took her from a mental hospital where she lived from the age of 9 to 21 after her parents mysteriously fell into a coma.
Larry Newman
Larry is a forest official Steven meets on his first mission for Bakerman in the first episode in Northern Canada. Together they go on this adventure and Larry starts working for Bakerman of his own free will.
Luther Niles
According to Mr. Bakerman, Luther Niles worked for the Canadian Secret Service and was killed on a mission. Accordingly, the people who pretend to be Luther Niles in the course of the series are said to be clones of the "real" Niles. These appear as opponents of the group around Bakerman and act as cold-blooded and experienced killers.
Armintore Fink
With his organization, Majore Fink is the opponent of Bakerman. He was an officer in the Italian occupation army in Libya in the 1930s . There he and Bakerman met for the first time during an expedition to the Kufra oases . Both came into contact with Ila-al-Khalf , the elixir of return, and thereby became immortal. Fink tries to eliminate Bakerman and infiltrate his organization by getting Larry Newman on his side.
Dorgan Finch
Dorgan is the son of Majore Armintore Fink. His plans and intentions are opaque, he doesn't seem to be on either side. He saves Larry Newman from certain death when he is held captive by Majore Fink. He later lures both his father and Bakerman into a deadly trap that only Bakerman could escape alive. Majore Fink comes to an end through the resulting events.
The Whisperer
The identity of the Whisperer is initially just as obscure as his motives. In the course of the series, however, you get the impression that for Steven Burns he represents a contact to the otherworldly world and stands by him as a protector. His identity is revealed by himself in episode 29.

In an interview on December 1, 2012, Volker Sassenberg announced that the legal dispute had been settled and that the new episodes of Gabriel Burns that had already been completed could be expected to be published “soon” .
