Gai ( Russian Гай ) is a medium-sized town with 38,301 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Orenburg Oblast, southeast of the Urals in the Russian Federation .
geography
The city is located about 35 km north of the two major cities Orsk and Novotroitsk , and about 330 km east of the regional capital Orenburg . There is a spa about six kilometers from the city.
history
Gai was founded in 1959 as a location for a copper ore mining combine, which has remained the main employer in the city to this day. The name Gai is a South Russian regionalism for grove, small (deciduous) forest and refers to a birch forest that is said to have existed there when the city was founded.

economy
The most important enterprise is the mining and processing combine of Gai AG (АО "Гайский горно-обогатительный комбинат”). The copper ore is mined both underground and above ground and processed in our own factory. The company employs nearly 7,000 people and accounts for about 60% of the city's budget.
Another large company is the non-ferrous metal processing factory (Гайский завод по обработке цветных металлов). Here, strips, sheets and foils are made from copper and various metal alloys.
There is also a poultry factory, a large dairy and a bread factory.
traffic
There is a railway connection to Gai, but it is only used for freight traffic. There are regular buses to the nearby city of Orsk and the regional capital Orenburg . There is public transport in the city with buses.
