Kuwandyk ( Russian Кувандык ) is a Russian city with 26,169 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the eastern Orenburg Oblast, south of the Urals .

location

Kuwandyk is located on the Sakmara tributary of the Urals , directly on the main road between the two metropolises Orenburg and Orsk . The distance to Orenburg is almost 200 km, to Orsk around 90 km. The nearest town, Mednogorsk , is about 15 km southeast of Kuwandyk. The city has a train station on the Trans-Aral Railway .

history

The place was founded at the end of the 19th century by settlers from the European part of Russia and the Ukraine as the village of Pokrovka (Покровка). When a railway station was built here in 1915, the name was changed to Kuwandyk to avoid confusion with a station of the same name. That's the name of a river near the city. In 1953 Kuwandyk was officially recognized as a city.
