Tjulgan ( Russian Тюльга́н ) is a settlement (possjolok) in the Orenburg Oblast in Russia with 8959 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 100 km as the crow flies northeast of the Orenburg Oblast Administrative Center at the southern end of the Kleiner Nakas ridge (chrebet Maly Nakas) , one of the low mountain ranges upstream of the Southern Urals or the Silair plateau to the west. A river of the same name rises near the village and flows over Salmysh and Sakmara to the Urals .

The settlement is the administrative center Rajons Tjulganski and seat of the rural community possowet (selskoje posselenije) Tjulganski, and Nowowassiljewka (4 km west-northwest) are among the also the two villages Nowonikolajewka (km west 4).

history

The place was founded in 1953 in connection with the beginning of the development of a lignite deposit immediately to the north that was discovered in the 1940s . In 1957, Tjulgan received urban-type settlement status . The place name is derived from Bashkir төйлөгән (töjlögən) for ' black kite '; this is also reflected in the municipal flag.

Initially, the settlement belonged to the Troitski rajon, based in the village of Troitskoye, 15 kilometers to the east . On August 10, 1960, the administrative seat was moved to the now more important Tjulgan, but the name of the Rajon was retained. On February 1, 1963, the Rajon was temporarily dissolved and its territory assigned to the western neighboring Oktjabrski rajon with seat in Oktjabrskoje . Since the re-establishment of the Rajon within the de facto old borders on January 12, 1965, the Rajon has been given its current name after the administrative seat.

The place has been a rural settlement since 1999.

traffic

The regional road 53K-3312000 runs through Tjulgan, which  branches off the federal highway R240 Ufa - Orenburg almost 30 km west in Novomuraptalowo and continues in an easterly direction via Troitskoye to the regional road 80K-12 (R240 - Silair  - Sibai ) in the Republic of Bashkortostan .

Tjulgan is the end point of a 326-kilometer railway line built in the 1950s from the Djoma station in Ufa via Sterlitamak , Salawat and Meleus . The last section to Tjulgan mainly serves for the removal of coal, which fell sharply in the 1990s; the passenger traffic is stopped there.
