location
Sorochinsk is located near the western foothills of the Ural Mountains and on the left bank of the Samara River , about 170 km northwest of the regional capital Orenburg . The closest city is Buzuluk , which is 70 km northwest of Sorochinsk.
history
Sorochinsk was founded in 1737, at that time still in the middle of a vast steppe landscape , as a fortress called Sorochinskaja krepost ( Сорочинская крепость ). The name comes from the small Samara tributary Soroka, which literally means "magpie". During the Pugachev peasant uprising in 1774, the fortress could not stop the rebels and was devastated by them. Although later rebuilt, Sorochinsk soon lost its importance as a defensive base.
After a railway line was laid along the Samara in 1876, which also leads past Sorochinsk, trade flourished in the town and, a little later, industry. At the end of the 19th century, Sorochinsk already had over 5000 inhabitants.
1945 Sorochinsk received city rights. In the 1970s, oil and gas fields were developed near the city .
