particularities

The Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 (short Samsung Galaxy S II ) is a smartphone from Samsung with the operating system Android . It was unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011 and first sold in South Korea on April 28, 2011. It is the successor of the Samsung Galaxy S . A year after it went on sale, 28 million devices were in circulation. Its successor, the Samsung Galaxy S III , was presented in London on May 3, 2012.

With over three million pre-orders, the Samsung Galaxy S II was the most frequently pre-ordered Android phone until its successor, the S III, which, according to the company, had already received nine million pre-orders before it went on sale. Samsung is personalizing the user interface with its own TouchWiz launcher version 4, or since the firmware update to Android 4.1.2 with TouchWiz Nature UX, the latest launcher to date.

As usual with Android smartphones, the device is operated via a capacitive touchscreen display . It has a diagonal of 10.85 cm (4.3 inches) with a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels ( WVGA ). The "Super AMOLED Plus" technology developed by Samsung is used ; it should bring about a higher color fidelity and at the same time less thickness, and the display should also be more energy-efficient than that of the predecessor and that of the competing LCDs .

camera

The device, which is 8.5 millimeters thick, contains an 8 megapixel camera with a 1 / 3.2 "CMOS sensor with 3264 × 2448 pixels and a pixel size of 1.28 µm. In contrast to its predecessor, there is a built-in LED flash for poor lighting conditions The device can record and play 1080p HD videos, while the Samsung media player can also zoom in on the video during playback. However, the fourfold digital zoom is only available up to HD 720p resolution during video recording In addition, a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front, which can record videos in a resolution of 720 × 480 pixels.

hardware

For the German market, the Exynos S5PV310 dual-core CPU developed by Samsung is installed with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz; for some parts of the world, an Nvidia Tegra -2 SoC should be used as an alternative . The smartphone is equipped with 1 GB RAM and the standard version GT-I9100 with 16 GB internal flash memory , and there is also a slot for a microSD card with up to 32 GB. 64 GB microSD cards can also be used, provided they are reformatted in the device itself ( FAT32 ). In addition to UMTS and HSPA , HSPA + can be used to surf the Internet while mobile at a data rate of up to 21.6 Mbit / s. It is also possible to connect to a local WLAN; The device supports the standards 802.11 a, b, g, and n. A Bluetooth 3.0 module is built into the Galaxy S II , but it is also Bluetooth 4.0 compatible (e.g. with the alternative CyanogenMod 12 custom ROM).

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S II supports the Bluetooth profile rSAP (remote SIM Access Profile) for operating the phone on a suitable car hands-free system, but only in versions up to Android 2.3.6. From version 4.0.4 rSAP is available again.

The smartphone can be connected to a monitor or television with HDMI input using an MHL adapter available as an accessory .

Firmware modifications

Custom kernel

Custom kernels allow, among other things, a. change the clock frequency of the processor. Various variants are offered, e.g. B. Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root .

CustomROMs

For all variants of the S II there are countless alternative firmware, called CustomROMs. For the model variants I9100 and I9100G there is a stable version of CyanogenMod (CM) 10.1.3 (based on Android 4.2.2) and an alpha version (called "Nightly") of CM 11 (based on Android 4.4).

An official version of Cyanogenmod 12.1 (based on Android 5.1.1) has been available since the beginning of July 2015, an official version of Cyanogenmod 13 (based on Android 6) since February 2016 and an official version of Cyanogenmod 14.1 (based on Android 7.1.2) for the Galaxy S II I9100. variants

With the Galaxy R (also Galaxy Z), Samsung offered a slimmed-down version of the Galaxy S II in Europe, in Sweden the device is called the Galaxy R. Among other things, the camera of the Galaxy R only has a resolution of 5 megapixels and can only Record 720p HD video.

Galaxy S II - GT-I9100G

In addition to the main model GT-I9100 described above, a modified model called GT-I9100G was also offered, which contains a different CPU and GPU. In fact, Samsung's own Exynos 4210 SoC -CPU and an ARM Mali-400 GPU are installed in the Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 and a Texas Instruments OMAP4430 CPU and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU are installed in the GT-I9100G .

The G variant is rated as significantly worse by many users and various specialist media and can de facto be described as a “downgrade”.

Galaxy S II NFC - GT-I9100P

In contrast to the original variant, the battery of the S II NFC has near-field radio NFC ( Near Field Communication ). Otherwise it has the same hardware as its sister variant, that is, with new operating system versions only the settings menu and the drivers have to be adjusted compared to the I9100G.

Galaxy S II LTE - GT-I9210

There are also model variations with LTE radio module (GT-I9210) and NFC module as well as DMB reception .

Galaxy S II Plus - GT-I9105

The Galaxy S II Plus was presented at CES 2013 . Instead of 16 GB, it only has 8 GB of internal memory and uses a Broadcom VideoCore IV HW GPU in contrast to the Mali 400MP in the original Galaxy S II. It comes with Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean" and Samsung's Nature UX interface. Android 4.2.2 has been available since August 2013. The Galaxy S II Plus is also available in a variant with NFC (GT-I9105P).

Further development

At the end of August 2011, Samsung presented the Galaxy S II LTE. In addition to supporting the LTE standard, some technical data has also changed. The clock rate of the dual-core processor was increased to 1.5 GHz and the screen was enlarged from 10.9 to 11.4 cm (4.5 inches). In addition, an NFC chip has been integrated and the battery capacity has been increased to 1850 mAh. As a result, the dimensions and weight of the smartphone have increased slightly.

Due to patent disputes between Apple and Samsung, the S II is not sold in the Netherlands. In addition, Apple sought an import ban in the EU and the EU-wide sales ban on the Galaxy series.

At the start of sales, Android version 2.3.3 “Gingerbread” was used as the operating system . Version 2.3.6 has been available from Kies and FOTA since the beginning of February 2012 . In April Android 4.0.3 ("Ice Cream Sandwich") was released for all versions except the G version of the Galaxy S2. Android 4.0.4 has been available for the G version since August 2012, and since September 2012 also for the version without “G”. Version 4.1.2 alias "Jelly Bean" has been available since March 7, 2013. In addition, there is (as of March 26, 2016) a stable version of CyanogenMod 12.1 that enables the use of Android 5.1.1 alias "Lollipop". This version also contains the Google Apps (Google Play Store, Gmail etc.). Since September 2017, various programmers have been developing custom ROMs for Android 8.0 alias "Oreo" for the S2 GT-I9100 basic model. Various nightly versions have already been completed and are constantly being further developed. One of them is LineageOS, the successor to CyanogenMod, which supported the S II up to version 14 (Android 7). In 2020 an "unofficial" LinageOS Build 17.1 based on Android 10 was made available.
