Karl Friedrich Gebhard Graf von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg , actually Carl Friedrich Gebhard Graf von der Schulenburg , (born March 21, 1763 in Braunschweig ; † December 25, 1818 ibid) was a large landowner. During the Ancien Régime he was a high court official in the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , in the Kingdom of Westphalia he was President of the Imperial Estates and in the Duchy of Braunschweig he was a leading politician.

He was the eldest son of Gebhard Werner Graf von der Schulenburg (1722–1788) from the Wolfsburg family, confidante and minister under Friedrich II of Prussia . The mother was Sophie-Charlotte (born von Veltheim) (1735–1793). Educator was the theologian Ferdinand Carl August Henke (1748–1786). He also accompanied him to Magdeburg , where Schulenburg attended the Berge monastery school until 1777 before he switched to the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig , where he mainly studied natural sciences between 1778 and 1782. Since 1782 he studied in Göttingen especially law . He then spent the years 1784 to 1786 as a partner of the Hereditary Prince Karl Georg August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1766–1806), son of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, in Lausanne .

Then Schulenburg went back to Braunschweig. He became a chamberlain and assessor in the monastery council chamber. After the death of his father in 1788 he became captain of the castle. He remained closely connected to the Hereditary Prince. He accompanied him to the Netherlands for his wedding to Friederike Luise Wilhelmine von Oranien . Schulenburg held the office of chief steward in their court for a few years.

He finally gave up this position in order to take care of his own possessions. He was the master of Wolfsburg , Brome , Bisdorf u. a.

On September 17, 1789 he married Anna Christine Wilhelmine von Münchhausen (April 8, 1769 - March 21, 1832). His brother-in-law Johann Georg Friedrich Freiherr von Friesen was later a member of the imperial estates with him. From the marriage Werner von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg (1792–1861) emerged as a son, who worked as a member of the Brandenburg provincial parliament and the 1st Prussian Chamber . The grandson Günther (1819–1895) and great-grandson Werner (1857–1924) were also members of the Prussian mansion . Two other sons died in the Wars of Liberation in 1813 and 1814, respectively.

After the establishment of the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807, King Jérôme Bonaparte tried to win him over to the civil service. Schulenburg rejected this. However, he took over the chairmanship of the electoral college of the Department of Oker . He was also President of the Imperial Estates of the Kingdom of Westphalia at the two sessions in 1808 and 1810 .

Nevertheless, the authorities distrusted him and he was under surveillance by the secret police.

Head of Government in Braunschweig

After the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm made him head of the provisional government college in 1814. Schulenburg accompanied the Duke to the headquarters of the anti-Napoleonic coalition in France . Due to disagreements with the Duke, Schulenburg gave up his office again in 1814.

Thereupon he returned to his property. Since these were partly on the territory of the Kingdom of Hanover , he was also a member of the Hanover Estates from December 15, 1814 to December 25, 1818. From December 15, 1814 to October 16, 1815, he was President of the Hanoverian Assembly of Estates. After Duke Friedrich Wilhelm's death, he was once again chairman of the Privy Council College of the Duchy of Braunschweig. He held the office until his death. He was the last lord of Wolfsburg to be buried in the family vault of St. Mary's Church .

Awards

On January 24, 1810, Gebhard von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Westphalian Crown . By royal decree of January 31, 1810, he received the title of Excellency . He was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Guelph Order , the Order of the Red Eagle 1st class and was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
